Overview

The Makita XRU24Z 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless String Trimmer is a bare-tool outdoor power tool built for homeowners, property maintenance crews, and Makita users who need a light, compact machine for trimming and edging. This is a cordless string trimmer designed for precision trimming and edging. Model Number: XRU24Z. If you already run Makita 18V LXT batteries, this tool gives you a simple way to clean up grass lines, fence runs, walkways, and tighter areas without the noise, fumes, and upkeep that come with gas equipment.

On the cutting side, Makita rates the motor at 7,800 RPM with a 10-1/4 in. cutting swath. That tells you exactly where this tool fits: it is made for controlled trimming, not clearing heavy brush. The narrower swath helps when you are working around flower beds, posts, hardscape edges, and other places where accuracy matters more than brute force. For detail work, that smaller footprint is often a plus because it is easier to keep the line where you want it.

One of the more useful parts of the design is the 2-tools-in-1 head. The head rotates 180, so you can switch from trimming to edging without grabbing another tool. That matters if you are maintaining sidewalks, drive edges, and landscape borders and want a cleaner finish with less gear to carry. Makita also gives it a 5-position pivoting head, which helps when you need to trim under benches, around shrubs, or along spots where a straight-on approach is awkward.

The fit and feel are clearly aimed at comfort and control. The telescoping shaft adjusts from 48-1/4 in. to 56-1/2 in., and the adjustable loop handle lets different users dial in a better working position. That makes a difference on longer cleanup sessions and is especially helpful if more than one person uses the tool. The loop-handle layout also keeps the machine compact and easy to maneuver around tight landscaping and smaller yards.

For day-to-day use, Makita includes an easy-loading bump and feed trimmer head with a metal-reinforced bump knob. That is the kind of detail that matters on an outdoor tool because the bump knob takes abuse. The trimmer is also relatively light for its class, with a stated net weight of 5.6 lbs. with battery, so it is easier to handle overhead edges, slope transitions, and repetitive passes around the yard.

As part of the Makita 18V LXT platform, the XRU24Z is meant for users already invested in Makita batteries and chargers. It is compatible with Makita 18V LXT Lithium-Ion batteries, and Makita specifically notes support for batteries with the star symbol for Star Protection Computer Controls. That system is designed to monitor for overload, over-discharge, and overheating, which helps protect both the tool and battery during use. Makita also states up to 1 hour of runtime with an 18V LXT 4.0Ah battery, though this bare tool does not include a battery or charger.

Who is this for? The best fit is the buyer who wants a lightweight Makita string trimmer for routine lawn maintenance, detail trimming, and edging, especially if they already own 18V LXT packs. It makes sense for homeowners with small to medium yards, maintenance work around apartment or office properties, and anyone who values low noise and low maintenance. If you need to knock down thick weeds or large overgrown areas, you will want a heavier-duty trimmer. If your work is precision-focused and you are already on the Makita platform, this one makes a lot more sense.
