Overview

The Makita GMT01Z 40V max XGT Brushless Cordless StarlockMax Oscillating Multi-Tool is a cordless oscillating multi-tool built for cutting, scraping, sanding, and flush work across remodeling and finish applications. This is a multi-tool designed for controlled cutting and sanding in tight spaces. Model Number: GMT01Z. As a bare tool, it is aimed at users already on the Makita XGT platform who want pro-level runtime, less vibration, and broad Starlock accessory compatibility without paying for another battery and charger.

On the job, the big story is control. The variable speed dial gives you a working range of 10,000 to 20,000 OPM, which lets you tune the tool to the material instead of forcing one speed into every task. That matters when you move from trimming wood flooring to cutting drywall openings, sanding filler, or making careful cuts in PVC. Makita also gives this tool a 3.6 degree oscillation angle, which helps it cut and sand more aggressively than lower-angle designs while still staying manageable in detail work.

The Makita GMT01Z 40V max XGT Brushless Cordless StarlockMax Oscillating Multi-Tool is set up for people who actually use a multi-tool for more than occasional punch-list work. The brushless motor supports efficiency and longer service life, while the compact body and small-diameter barrel grip help the tool feel planted in your hand instead of bulky. Makita lists the tool at 12 inches overall length, so it stays easy to position under toe kicks, against trim, and in other spots where larger cordless tools get awkward.

Comfort is another real selling point here. Makita uses Anti-Vibration Technology to cut vibration by up to 85%, and that is not just a paper spec. Lower vibration helps you stay accurate in plunge cuts, reduces hand fatigue during sanding, and makes repetitive work less annoying over the course of a full day. Add in the soft start feature, and the tool comes up to speed in a more controlled way instead of jumping the second you hit the switch.

For jobsite practicality, Makita kept the basics right. You get a large slide switch with lock-on and lock-off functions, a built-in LED light for shadowed work areas, and tool-free accessory changes. The tool is also built with Makita Extreme Protection Technology for improved dust and water resistance in harsher conditions. If you are working in remodel dust, on a punch list, or moving between interior and exterior spaces, those durability details matter more than flashy extras.

Compatibility is strong, which is a big reason this model stands out. It works with StarlockMax, StarlockPlus, and Starlock accessories, so you are not boxed into a limited blade selection. On the power side, it is part of the Makita 40V max XGT platform and is designed to run on Makita 40V max XGT lithium-ion batteries only. That makes this a smart fit for current XGT users who want to add a high-demand cutting and sanding tool to the same battery system.

This model makes the most sense for remodelers, flooring installers, carpenters, electricians, plumbers, drywall crews, and serious DIY users who need one tool that can handle detail cuts without dragging out a cord. If you already own XGT batteries and want a pro-grade oscillating multi-tool with low vibration, broad accessory compatibility, and a compact body, this one is easy to justify. If you need a battery and charger, just remember this is the tool-only version.

Compact Size, Better Access

A multi-tool earns its keep when space gets tight, and this one is built for that kind of work. The compact body and barrel-grip shape make it easier to guide around casing, flooring edges, wall openings, and other detail-heavy spots.

• Overall length is 12 in. for easier access in confined areas
• Small diameter barrel grip improves handling and comfort
• Built-in LED light helps when working in cabinets, corners, and dim rooms

Fast Changes and Broad Accessory Fit

Accessory compatibility can make or break a multi-tool. The GMT01Z works with the full Starlock family listed by Makita, so you can set it up for aggressive cutting, finish work, scraping, or sanding without being stuck with a narrow blade selection.

• Compatible with StarlockMax, StarlockPlus, and Starlock accessories
• Tool-less blade change speeds up swaps between tasks
• 3.6 degree oscillation angle supports quicker, more aggressive cutting and sanding
