Overview

Milwaukee M12 Cordless Lithium-Ion Rotary Tool Overview

The Milwaukee M12 Cordless Lithium-Ion Rotary Tool, Model 2460-20, is a compact battery-powered rotary tool for pros and serious DIY users who need corded-style versatility without dragging a cord into tight work areas. This is a cordless rotary tool designed for close-quarter cutting, grinding, sanding, polishing, and detail work. If you already run Milwaukee M12 batteries, this bare tool gives you a flexible way to handle trim-out, repair work, and small material removal jobs with better mobility than a corded unit.

The headline spec here is the 5,000 to 32,000 RPM no-load speed range. That range matters because rotary tools are not one-speed tools. Slower settings give you better control on delicate material or finish work, while the higher end helps when you need quicker cutting or more aggressive grinding. Milwaukee also pairs that with a variable-speed dial, so you are not stuck forcing one setup to do every job.

The tool ships with a 1/8 inch collet and accepts accessories with shank sizes from 1/32 inch to 1/8 inch when used with the proper collet. In practical terms, that means you can set it up for cutoff wheels, grinding points, sanding accessories, polishing pieces, and other standard rotary tool tasks without being boxed into a proprietary accessory system. For a tool this small, that kind of accessory range is a big part of the value.

Milwaukee clearly built this one around real-world service work. The compact body and light weight make it easier to guide with one hand when you are cutting a small opening, trimming hardware, or cleaning up a part in place. Listed weights vary, but this is a lightweight tool meant for long stretches of use and control in confined areas. That is exactly where a rotary tool earns its keep.

Durability is another point worth calling out. Milwaukee uses grinder-style exhaust ports and front bearing protection to help the tool hold up better in dusty, debris-heavy work. That is not filler. Rotary tools often get used where fine dust and grit are unavoidable, and that debris can shorten tool life fast. Protecting the front bearing and managing airflow is a smart move for anyone who uses a rotary tool on actual jobs instead of hobby-bench-only tasks.

This tool runs on the Milwaukee M12 battery system and is sold here as a bare tool, so the battery and charger are not included. For existing M12 users, that is a plus because you can drop in the same battery platform you already own. For first-time buyers, just know you will need to add an M12 battery and charger before you are ready to work.

Who is it for? This model makes the most sense for maintenance contractors, electricians, plumbers, automotive mechanics, and remodelers who need a small cordless rotary tool that can move from cutoff work to cleanup work without a lot of setup. It also fits serious DIY users who want a more jobsite-ready option than a light hobby tool. If your work involves detail cutting, grinding in awkward locations, or quick material cleanup where a full-size grinder or saw would be overkill, this is the kind of tool that ends up getting used a lot.

Cut, Grind, and Clean Up Without a Cord

When the job is too tight for a bigger tool and too awkward for a cord, this rotary tool makes more sense. It is compact enough for controlled detail work, but it still gives you the speed range needed for real cutting and grinding tasks.

• Variable speed from 5,000 to 32,000 RPM for better control across different materials and accessories
• Compact body helps with close-quarter cutting, trim-out, and repair work

Easy to Handle in Service Work

Tools like this earn their keep in punch-list work, plumbing repairs, electrical cut-ins, and mechanical service where access is limited and precision matters more than brute force. The light build helps reduce hand fatigue during repetitive detail work.

• Approximate length of 9 to 9.5 inches keeps the tool manageable in cramped spaces
• Lightweight design supports one-handed use and fine control

Designed to Hold Up Better on Real Jobs

Rotary tools live around dust, grit, and flying debris, so durability details matter. Milwaukee adds grinder-style exhaust ports and front bearing protection to help this tool last longer in cutoff and grinding applications.

• Front bearing protection helps guard a high-wear area against impact and contamination
• Exhaust port design helps keep debris away from internal components
