Key Features

Built for Nail Hits This spade bit is made for drilling through nail-embedded wood without giving up edge life right away. The Dura-Tip and Demo-Edge design are there for one reason: keep boring holes when the lumber is not clean. Impact Driver Ready The Diablo DSPD4040 spade bit is built for corded and cordless impact and drill drivers. That gives you more flexibility on rough jobs, service work, and punch-list drilling where the tool in your hand changes all day. More Holes Per Charge The curved paddle design clears chips fast so the bit keeps feeding instead of packing up in the hole. Less drag means smoother drilling and better battery efficiency when you are running cordless.

Overview

The Diablo DSPD4040 7/8 in. x 6 in. Demo Demon Spade Bit for Nail-Embedded Wood is a single spade drill bit built for fast rough boring in wood that may have nails hiding inside it. This is a spade drill bit designed for boring holes in clean wood and nail-embedded wood. Model Number: DSPD4040. If you do remodel work, framing repairs, rough-in drilling, or demo where perfect lumber is not part of the job, this bit is aimed right at that kind of work.

What matters here is not just the 7/8 inch diameter and 6 inch length. It is how the bit is built to stay productive in bad material. Diablo calls out up to 60X longer life in nail-embedded wood versus standard spade bits, and that is the whole pitch of the Demo Demon line. Instead of treating a nail strike like the end of the bit, the ultra-sharp Demo-Edge cutting geometry and Dura-Tip are built to take that abuse and keep drilling.

The self-feeding tip helps pull the bit through the material so you are not forcing every hole. That matters when you are drilling repeated pass-throughs for pipe, cable, or general rough carpentry. The optimized curved paddle shape is also there for a practical reason: chip removal. A spade bit that clears waste better cuts faster, runs cooler, and is less likely to bind up when you are moving fast on the job.

On the tool side, the 1/4 inch hex shank gives this wood-boring bit broad compatibility with both impact drivers and drill drivers, corded or cordless. That makes it a useful bit to keep in the truck because it does not demand a dedicated tool setup. If you are already working from an impact driver for speed, you can stay there. If you want more control with a drill/driver, it works there too.

Material-wise, this DIABLO spade drill bit uses high carbon steel and is rated for wood, wood with nails, hardwoods, softwoods, and plywood. In plain terms, this is not a finish-carpentry specialty bit for pristine surfaces. It is a jobsite accessory built for rough boring where durability matters more than pretty hole walls. That makes it a good fit for remodelers, electricians, plumbers, general contractors, and serious DIY users working in existing structures.

If your work regularly involves old framing, patched walls, reclaimed material, or any lumber where fasteners are a possibility, this bit makes more sense than a basic spade bit. You are paying for toughness, better chip ejection, and tool flexibility. For clean new lumber it still works fine, but its real value shows up when the material fights back.

Pro Tip

When you are boring through old framing, let the self-feeding tip do the work and back the bit out occasionally to clear chips. That keeps the cut cooler and makes it easier for the bit to recover if you clip a hidden nail.

• Who it's for: Remodelers, electricians, plumbers, carpenters, and homeowners drilling through framing where nails may still be in the wood.
• Why it stands out: It is built specifically for nail-embedded wood, uses a self-feeding design, and works in both drill drivers and impact drivers with a 1/4 inch hex shank.
• Worth knowing: This is a single 7/8 inch spade bit, not a set. If you only drill clean finish material, its real advantage may be more toughness than you need.
