Overview

The Woodpeckers CSQ-XL-20 in-DEXABLE Combo Square XL - 18 in. Blade (Model CSQ-XL-20) is an adjustable combination square designed for woodworking layout and accurate marking. It is built for shop work where repeatability matters, especially when you are scribing lines parallel to an edge.

The standout feature is the blade's laser-cut scribing guides cut every one-sixteenth inch. They are sized to capture a pencil tip so you can run the square along an edge and lay out parallel lines cleanly. To keep the scribing guides "zeroed" even though the head moves, you depress the spring-loaded index pin and lock the head at any full inch, then clamp it down.

For day-to-day layout, Woodpeckers engraves the scales with one edge in sixteenths and the other in thirty-seconds. The laser-engraved scales are held to a tolerance of 0.004 inch total accumulated error over the entire blade length, so the numbers stay trustworthy from end to end instead of drifting as the rule gets longer.

The XL head is built thicker for better referencing. The head is a full 1 inch thick with just under 1/2 inch beneath the blade, which helps prevent rounded-over stock edges from changing your reading. It also gives the tool a stable stance for cabinet checks and machinery adjustment when you need the square to stand up vertical.

Woodpeckers machines the head from aircraft grade aluminum to keep weight down versus typical cast iron heads, while staying thick and long along both reference edges. The blade is stainless steel with a satin finish and deep, dark graduations for quick reads under shop light.

The XL models share the same blade fit as standard-sized in-DEXABLE squares, so the system stays consistent if you already own in-DEXABLE blades. If you want a combo square that is purpose-built for repeatable scribing, precise layout, and fast setup, this one is aimed squarely at furniture makers, cabinet builders, and anyone tired of "close enough" rules.

Accurate Parallel Scribing Without Guesswork

When you need a clean, repeatable line down a panel edge, the scribing guides do the work instead of your eyeballs. Set the head, lock the index, and run the square like a fence.

• Laser-cut scribing guides cut every one-sixteenth inch along the blade
• Spring-loaded index pin provides positive indexing at every full inch

Stays Square on the Edge

The adjustable head support is there for the moments you normally need an extra hand. Slide it out to keep the head planted on the stock edge, then slide it back when you do not need it.

• Sliding head support helps hold alignment during layout
• Combination square layout for ninety degree and forty-five degree marking

Protected Storage, Always Visible

This is the kind of layout tool you want off the bench and within reach. The included rack keeps it from getting buried and keeps the blade from getting dinged up.

• Wall-mountable Rack-It storage is included with individual squares
• Made in the USA (Strongsville, Ohio)

Pro Tip

If you are using the scribing guides, set your offset by pressing the index pin and locking the head at a full inch first. That gives you a consistent starting point, then you can pick off one-sixteenth increments without doing any math.

Tool Nut's Take

Tool Nut's Take

Why the Woodpeckers CSQ-XL-20 in-DEXABLE Combo Square XL - 18 in. Blade earns a spot on the bench

This one is built for people who actually measure and mark for a living, not folks collecting shiny red tools.

• Who it's for: Woodworkers doing repeat layout, cabinet checks, and accurate parallel scribing.
• Why it stands out: The one-sixteenth scribing guides plus full-inch indexing make parallel lines fast, and the 0.004 inch accuracy spec keeps the scale honest over the full 18 inches.
• Worth knowing: It is an XL head and blade setup, so it is bigger and heavier than a basic hardware-store combination square, but that extra reference surface is the whole point.

Common Questions

• What makes this different from a standard combination square? It adds laser-cut scribing guides every one-sixteenth inch, positive indexing at every full inch, and a sliding head support for easier edge referencing.
• How accurate are the engraved scales? The blade scales are laser engraved to a tolerance of 0.004 inch total accumulated error over the entire blade length.
• Are the blades shared across the in-DEXABLE system? Yes. XL models fit the same blades as standard-sized Woodpeckers in-DEXABLE squares.
