Overview

The Milwaukee M18 FUEL STRIKER Hammer Chisel (3771-21) is the first cordless hammer chisel built to match long-barrel pneumatic striking force without a compressor or air hose anywhere in sight. This is a cordless hammer chisel designed for automotive service technicians who need to separate ball joints, tie rods, and control arms at full pneumatic speed, whether they're at a bay with an air line run to it or three states away from one. A POWERSTATE Brushless Motor drives 7 Joules of striking energy the same output leading long-barrel pneumatic hammers deliver at 145 PSI shop pressure packaged into a pistol-grip tool you carry to the job instead of the other way around.

On the trigger side, it's a genuinely controllable tool, not just a powerful one. A variable speed trigger lets you feather the impact rate from a dead stop up to 3,000 blows per minute, and three selectable modes a 0 to 2,500 BPM setting, a 0 to 3,000 BPM setting, and a ramp-up mode that builds speed gradually give you a way to match the strike to how stubborn the joint actually is. That matters on suspension work: a rusted-in ball joint calls for a different touch than a fresh tie rod end, and full power into either without control risks marring a boot, cracking a knuckle, or sending the chisel skating off target. The ramp-up mode is built for that first-contact moment, so you can seat the chisel before stepping into full pneumatic-equivalent force.

The engineering underneath backs up the numbers. A patented battery isolation system keeps the pack seated securely and cuts down on the vibration a 7-Joule impact mechanism would otherwise send into your hand over a full shift. REDLINK PLUS Intelligence runs full-circle communication between the tool, battery, and charger to guard against overload, heat, and over-discharge the same protection scheme found across the rest of the M18 lineup. Bit changes go through a .401-inch round shank twist chuck: twist, drop the bit in, twist back, and it locks automatically, no collar or button to fight with cold or greasy hands.

For actual bay work, the details add up. A targeted LED work light throws light exactly where the chisel meets the joint, which matters more than it sounds like when you're working blind under a wheel well. At 9.35 lbs and 4.1 inches long (bare tool), it's sized to reach the same tight spaces a pneumatic hammer would, minus the hose snaking behind it and catching on brake lines and control arms. Milwaukee backs the tool with a 3-year warranty, and keeping the twist-lock chuck smooth is as simple as a monthly drop of oil-based lubricant.

Because it runs on the M18 REDLITHIUM platform, this suspension teardown tool pulls double duty as one more tool that shares batteries and chargers with everything else in an M18-equipped bay impact wrenches, ratchets, lights, and over 300 tools in total. This kit pairs the 3771-20 tool head with an M18 REDLITHIUM HIGH OUTPUT XC5.0 Resistant battery and an M18 & M12 charger, so a shop already standardized on M18 batteries can run this tool off packs it already owns, or pull a bigger pack off the shelf for longer stretches between charges.

This is a ball joint removal tool and automotive service tool first, and Milwaukee doesn't position it as anything else it's not a substitute for an SDS Max rotary hammer on concrete or masonry. Where it earns its keep is metal-on-metal separation: ball joints, tie rods, control arms, wheel pins, anywhere a technician currently reaches for a long-barrel air hammer. If that's a regular part of the workday, the M18 FUEL STRIKER Hammer Chisel cuts the compressor and hose out of the equation entirely; if the job is actually chiseling concrete, a rotary hammer is still the right call.

Ball Joint Removal at Pneumatic Speed

Separating a seized ball joint is one of the more punishing parts of a suspension teardown when the only cordless option on the cart is an impact driver or a manual pickle fork. The M18 FUEL STRIKER Hammer Chisel is built specifically for this moment 7 Joules of impact energy at up to 3,000 BPM gets a fork bit through a stuck joint at the same speed a shop air hammer would, without a hose run to the bay.

• Matches long-barrel pneumatic output at 145 PSI shop pressure
• Cuts ball joint and tie rod separation time versus manual tools
• Runs anywhere in the shop or in the field no compressor required

World's First Cordless Hammer Chisel

Milwaukee built the M18 FUEL STRIKER Hammer Chisel to be the first cordless tool in its class, and the target application shows in the details it's sized and balanced for the tight quarters around a hub, rotor, or backing plate, not scaled down from a bigger demolition tool. A POWERSTATE Brushless Motor and patented battery isolation system keep impact energy consistent and vibration manageable through repetitive strikes.

• POWERSTATE Brushless Motor delivers consistent 7-Joule strikes
• Patented battery isolation system reduces vibration and keeps the pack seated
• Compatible with all M18 REDLITHIUM batteries and chargers

Long-Barrel Reach for Tight Undercarriage Work

A long barrel and slim nose let the STRIKER reach into the same undercarriage spaces a pneumatic hammer would, without a hose to route around control arms and lines. The .401-inch round shank twist chuck makes swapping between a hammer chisel bit and a flat chisel bit a one-handed job, even mid-task underneath a vehicle.

• .401-in. round shank twist chuck with automatic locking
• Targeted LED work light for visibility in shadowed areas
• Variable speed trigger for feathered control from a dead stop

Pro Tip

Keep the twist-lock chuck operating smoothly by applying an oil-based lubricant to it about once a month it's a 30-second habit that prevents the chuck from binding up during fast bit changes on the job.

Warranty & Support

Backed by Milwaukee's 3-year tool warranty and a 3-year warranty on the included REDLITHIUM battery.

Tool Nut's Take

Tool Nut's Take

The M18 FUEL STRIKER Hammer Chisel Cuts the Hose Out of the Equation

If your shop still tethers ball joint work to an air compressor, this is the tool that lets you leave the hose coiled up.

• Who it's for: Automotive service technicians, mobile mechanics, and fleet techs who regularly separate ball joints, tie rods, and control arms.
• Why it stands out: It's the first cordless tool to hit 7 Joules of impact energy pneumatic-equivalent force at 145 PSI with three selectable modes for real control instead of just raw power.
• Worth knowing: This kit ships with the M18 REDLITHIUM HIGH OUTPUT XC5.0 Resistant battery (48-11-1855R), which is good for a full day of suspension work Milwaukee rates it at 20+ ball joint separations per charge.

Common Questions

• Does this replace my pneumatic air hammer? For ball joint, tie rod, and control arm separation, yes the M18 FUEL STRIKER Hammer Chisel matches the 7-Joule output of a long-barrel pneumatic hammer at 145 PSI without a compressor or hose. It's not built for concrete or masonry chiseling; that's still a job for a rotary hammer.
• What batteries does this kit use? It ships with one M18 REDLITHIUM HIGH OUTPUT XC5.0 Resistant battery (48-11-1855R) and an M18 & M12 charger (48-59-1812). It's compatible with every M18 REDLITHIUM battery Milwaukee makes.
• What accessories fit the chuck? Any standard .401-inch round shank hammer or flat chisel bit works with the tool-free twist chuck.
• What kind of work is this tool made for? It's purpose-built for automotive service technicians tearing down suspensions ball joints, tie rods, control arms, and wheel pins.
• How do I maintain the chuck? Apply an oil-based lubricant to the twist chuck about once a month to keep bit changes smooth.
