Overview

The Milwaukee 2648-20 M18 Cordless 5-Inch Random Orbit Sander is a cordless finish sander built for wood surface prep, smoothing, and material removal without dragging a cord around the shop or jobsite. This is a random orbit sander designed for finish sanding and surface preparation. Model Number 2648-20. If you already run Milwaukee M18 batteries, this bare tool gives you a compact sanding option that is easier to grab for punch-list work, cabinet adjustments, trim prep, and general woodworking cleanup.

What matters here is the balance between speed and finish quality. Milwaukee rates this tool at up to 12,000 OPM, with a variable speed range from 7,000 to 12,000 OPM, so you can match the pad speed to the material and the stage of the job. Lower settings make more sense when you are trying to keep control on delicate finish work or between-coat sanding. Higher settings help when you need to move material faster on raw wood or level out a surface before final prep. The 3/32 inch orbit diameter and 5 inch sanding pad are the familiar sweet spot for a general-purpose orbital sander that needs to remove stock but still leave a cleaner finish than a more aggressive setup.

The design is straightforward in a good way. A compact body and slide switch keep operation simple, and the hook-and-loop sanding pad makes paper changes quick when you are stepping through grits. That matters more than it sounds like on real jobs, because sanding usually means switching abrasives as the work changes. If a tool makes that process slow, it sits. This one is built to stay in rotation for routine sanding tasks.

Dust collection is another strong point. The included dust canister with filter handles basic collection right at the tool, which is useful for quick work when you do not want to drag out a full vacuum setup. When the job calls for cleaner sanding, Milwaukee includes a universal hose adapter and extension adapter so you can connect the sander to dust extraction. That is a practical advantage for indoor remodeling, trim work, and shop use where keeping airborne dust down saves cleanup time and makes finishing work more predictable.

As part of the M18 platform, this Milwaukee random orbit sander fits into a battery system a lot of users already own. It is compatible with all M18 batteries and chargers, and Milwaukee notes runtime up to 35 minutes with an M18 REDLITHIUM XC 3.0 battery pack. Since this is the tool-only version, batteries and charger are sold separately, which is the right move for anyone already invested in M18 and not looking to pay twice for power sources they already have.

Who should buy it? This tool makes the most sense for carpenters, remodelers, cabinet installers, finish crews, punch-list contractors, and serious DIY users who want cordless convenience for sanding wood, trim, filler, and painted surfaces. It is also a good fit for anyone who needs a 5 inch orbital sander for small-to-medium prep jobs and wants clean compatibility with the Milwaukee M18 system. If you need a cordless sander that is compact, easy to control, and set up for either onboard dust collection or vacuum connection, this one checks the right boxes without overcomplicating the job.
