Key Features

Self-Adjusting Strips The jaws automatically adjust to the wire or cable, so you spend less time swapping tools or fighting fixed-size notches. That matters when you are moving through multiple conductors on trim-out or rough-in. Dial In The Strip Adjustable tension and strip-length dials let you tune the cut for different wire sizes and insulation. You get cleaner, more consistent strips without nicking the conductor or wasting motion. Strip And Cut This Milwaukee wire stripper/cutter also has a built-in copper wire cutter positioned near the pivot for better leverage. It handles stripping and cutting with one hand tool instead of making you reach for another pair.

Overview

The Milwaukee 48-22-3082 Self-Adjusting Wire Stripper & Cutter is built for electricians, maintenance techs, and anyone who needs fast, repeatable wire prep without bouncing between multiple stripping tools. This is a wire stripper/cutter designed for fast, repeatable stripping of solid wire, stranded wire, and NM cable. Model Number: 48-22-3082. If your day involves trimming conductors in boxes, panels, or device work, this tool is meant to speed that up while keeping the strip controlled.

What makes this tool useful on the job is the self-adjusting head. Instead of lining up each conductor in a dedicated stripping hole, the Milwaukee 48-22-3082 Self-Adjusting Wire Stripper & Cutter adjusts to the wire or cable you feed into it. It strips 10-20 AWG solid wire, 12-22 AWG stranded wire, and 12/2 and 14/2 NM cable. That range covers a lot of everyday electrical work, especially when you are moving between branch circuit wire and cable in the same task.

The two dials are the part that separates this tool from a basic automatic stripper. One dial adjusts jaw tension for bigger or smaller wires, and the other controls strip length. In plain terms, you can fine-tune how aggressively the jaws bite and how much insulation comes off in one squeeze. That helps when you want repeatable terminations for switches, receptacles, fixtures, and other connections where sloppy strip length slows you down.

Milwaukee also builds in a cutter for copper wire, and it is positioned under the pivot for better leverage. That location matters because it gives the tool more mechanical advantage than a cutter placed farther out. The result is easier cuts with less hand strain, especially when you are working through multiple conductors. It can cut up to 12/2 NM cable in a single pass, which is a real time-saver during rough electrical work.

For day-to-day handling, the comfort-grip handles and compact overall size make sense. At about 8.07 inches high and 0.777 lb, it is easy to carry in a pouch or keep on hand for repetitive stripping work. The blade material is listed as stainless steel, which is a practical choice for durability in a hand tool that sees constant contact with insulation and copper. The handle material is polypropylene, giving the grips a stable base with decent control in gloved hands.

This tool is not insulated, so it is intended for work on de-energized circuits and standard wire prep tasks, not live-line applications. That is an important distinction for buyers comparing electrical hand tools. What you are getting here is speed, repeatability, and convenience in a general-purpose wire stripping and cutting tool, not a specialty insulated plier.

The best fit for this model is the user who regularly strips a mix of residential wire sizes and NM cable and wants one tool that covers the common range cleanly. Electricians, service techs, low-voltage installers working around standard conductors, maintenance crews, remodelers, and serious DIY users will all get value from it. If you mostly strip one exact gauge all day, a dedicated stripper still has its place. But if your work changes from wire to wire and box to box, this self-adjusting design is the smarter call.

Faster Stripping Across Common Electrical Wire

When you are working a box with multiple conductors, the self-adjusting action cuts down the usual stop-and-start of matching wire to fixed stripping holes. It is made to keep you moving through common residential and service wire sizes without changing tools.

• Strips 10-20 AWG solid wire
• Strips 12-22 AWG stranded wire
• Handles 12/2 and 14/2 NM cable

Control The Strip, Not Just The Cut

The adjustable dials are what make this tool more than a generic automatic stripper. You can fine-tune it for wire size and set strip length so your terminations come out more consistent from one conductor to the next.

• Adjustable tension dial helps match the jaw action to the wire
• Strip-length dial helps hold a repeatable strip length
• Useful when making repeated device and fixture connections

Built-In Cutting Power Saves A Step

The cutter sits close to the pivot for better leverage, which means easier cuts and fewer tool swaps. That is a practical advantage when you are trimming conductors, shortening cable, or cleaning up ends during installation work.

• Built-in cutter for copper wire
• Can cut up to 12/2 NM cable in a single pass
• Reduces hand movement between stripping and cutting tasks

Compact Enough For Everyday Carry

This is the kind of hand tool you can keep in the pouch all day without thinking about it. The size and weight are reasonable for repeated use, and the comfort-grip handles help when you are making the same motion over and over.

• Overall height: 8.07 in
• Weight: 0.777 lb
• Comfort grip handle design for better control

Pro Tip

Before running a whole batch of conductors, use a scrap piece to set the tension and strip-length dials for the exact wire you are working with that day. Once it is dialed in, this tool gets a lot more consistent and you spend less time re-stripping or trimming back ends.

Tool Nut's Take

Tool Nut's Take

Milwaukee 48-22-3082 Self-Adjusting Wire Stripper & Cutter Is A Real Time-Saver

If you strip a mix of wire sizes and NM cable all day, this is the kind of hand tool that earns its spot fast.

• Who it's for: Electricians, service techs, maintenance crews, remodelers, and serious DIY users doing regular wire prep.
• Why it stands out: The self-adjusting head, adjustable tension, and strip-length control make it faster and more repeatable than a basic fixed-hole stripper when the wire size keeps changing.
• Worth knowing: It is not an insulated tool, so buy it for efficient stripping and cutting on de-energized work, not for live electrical applications.

Common Questions

• What wire sizes can it strip? It strips 10-20 AWG solid wire and 12-22 AWG stranded wire.
• Can it handle NM cable? Yes. It is designed to strip 12/2 and 14/2 NM cable, and the cutter can cut up to 12/2 NM cable in a single pass.
• Does it have strip-length control? Yes. One of the two adjustable dials is used to set strip length for more consistent results.
• Is this an insulated electrical hand tool? No. It is non-insulated.
