Key Features

Less Shake, More Control Makita's AVT counterbalance system cuts vibration by up to 50%, so this reciprocating saw is easier to control during long demo cuts and overhead work. Fast Wood Cutting Orbital action, a 1-1/4 inch stroke, and up to 3,000 strokes per minute help the saw clear material fast when you're cutting framing lumber, sheathing, and other wood on tear-out work. XGT Cordless Power Built on Makita's 40V max XGT platform, it delivers 15 amp corded-class performance without dragging a cord through the jobsite.

Overview

The Makita GRJ02M1 40V max XGT Brushless Cordless AVT Orbital Recipro Saw Kit (4.0Ah) is a cordless reciprocating saw kit built for demolition, remodel work, wood cutting, and metal cutting where you want corded-level performance without being tied to an outlet. This is a reciprocating saw designed for aggressive cutting and demolition applications. Model Number: GRJ02M1. If you spend your day cutting out framing, pipe, nail-embedded wood, or mixed materials, this is the kind of saw that makes sense because it pairs high output with better control than a typical big reciprocating saw.

Makita rates it for the power of a 15 amp corded reciprocating saw, and that matters because this is not a light-duty trim tool pretending to be a demo saw. The brushless motor, 0 to 3,000 strokes per minute variable speed range, and 1-1/4 inch stroke length give it the speed and stroke needed to move through material efficiently. Add the on/off orbital setting and you get faster, more aggressive wood cutting when the job calls for ripping through studs, roof decking, pallets, or rough framing during tear-out.

What separates this saw from a lot of cordless options is how Makita addressed vibration. The internal AVT counterbalance system is built to reduce felt vibration by up to 50%, and the refined crank mechanism is designed to minimize blade deflection while reducing vibration even further. On the job, that means the saw stays easier to track through a cut, especially when you're working at awkward angles, overhead, or for long stretches. Less chatter also helps when you need a cleaner, more controlled cut instead of just brute-force demolition.

Makita also paid attention to day-to-day usability. The large two-finger variable speed trigger gives you finer control when starting a cut. The tool-free blade change lever speeds up blade swaps, which matters when you're bouncing between wood, metal, and demolition blades. An adjustable shoe helps you use more of the blade over time instead of wearing out one section early. The electric brake helps stop the blade faster between cuts, and the dual LED lights with pre-glow and afterglow make the work area easier to see in basements, crawlspaces, service areas, and partially lit remodel sites.

Durability is another strong point here. Makita calls out a metal-reinforced gear shaft and self-lubricating slider for longer service life, plus XPT protection for increased dust and water resistance in harsh conditions. That makes a real difference for contractors working in demolition dust, exterior remodels, or wet and dirty site conditions where cordless tools get beat up fast. The retractable hook is also a practical touch when you're moving around ladders, lifts, or staging and need to hang the saw temporarily instead of setting it on the floor.

This kit is part of the Makita 40V max XGT system, which is important if you're already building around that battery platform or planning to. XGT tools and batteries use digital communication to monitor overload, over-discharge, and overheating, and Makita designed the battery interface for more consistent power delivery in high-demand tools. The included 4.0Ah battery gives you a solid starting point for a high-draw saw like this, and the included rapid charger keeps downtime reasonable with a listed 45-minute charge time for the 4.0Ah pack.

Capacity numbers back up the saw's intended use. With a 12 inch blade, Makita lists a maximum wood cutting capacity of 10 inches and a maximum pipe cutting capacity of 5-1/8 inches. That makes it a good fit for general contractors, remodelers, plumbers, electricians, facility maintenance crews, and serious DIY users who need one saw that can handle framing lumber, wood with nails, conduit, and pipe. It is also a good choice for anyone who wants a full-size cordless reciprocating saw but is tired of the extra vibration that usually comes with the category.

If you're deciding where this fits, think of it as a pro-grade cordless demolition saw first. It is not the smallest reciprocating saw in the truck, but that 10.7 lb weight with battery is part of the reason it can deliver the output and stroke length needed for tougher cutting. For users who want speed, lower vibration, and real platform support from Makita's XGT line, this kit checks the right boxes.

Cut Faster in Wood

When the goal is getting through material quickly, the combination of long stroke length and orbital action matters more than spec-sheet bragging. This saw is set up to remove material fast in wood-heavy demo work.

• Up to 3,000 strokes per minute with variable speed control
• 1-1/4 inch stroke length for faster, deeper cutting progress
• On/off orbital feature for more aggressive cuts in wood

Built for Less Fatigue

Full-size cordless reciprocating saws can wear you out fast if they shake too much. Makita's AVT system and refined crank mechanism are there for one reason: better control when the cuts get long and ugly.

• AVT reduces vibration by up to 50%
• Refined crank mechanism helps reduce blade deflection
• 10.7 lb weight with battery balances output and control

Tool Nut's Take

Tool Nut's Take

Makita GRJ02M1 40V max XGT Brushless Cordless AVT Orbital Recipro Saw Kit (4.0Ah) is the right call when you want full-size demo performance without the usual cordless compromise

This saw earns its keep by giving you real cutting speed, noticeably better vibration control, and a solid XGT entry point in one kit.

• Who it's for: Contractors, remodelers, service trades, and serious DIY users who need a pro-grade reciprocating saw for wood, pipe, and demolition work.
• Why it stands out: The big story is not just power. It is the mix of 15 amp corded-class output, orbital action, and AVT that makes it faster and easier to run for longer stretches.
• Worth knowing: This is a full-size saw built for demanding work, not a compact one-hand model. If your priority is tight-space trimming over heavy cutting, look smaller. If your priority is ripping through material fast, this is more your speed.
