Corded Power, No Cord DEWALT rates this 60V MAX reciprocating saw at 1,874 unit watts out, with up to 19% more power than its previous FLEXVOLT recip saw, for demolition cuts that would stall a smaller cordless saw. Long, Fast Stroke 0 to 3,000 strokes per minute and a 1-1/8" stroke length clear material quickly, so the blade cuts instead of chattering. Quick Blade Swaps A keyless lever-action blade clamp lets you switch between wood and metal blades in seconds when the material changes mid-demo.

Overview

The DeWALT DCS389B Flexvolt 60V Max Brushless Cordless Reciprocating Saw, Tool Only is DEWALT's high-output cordless recip saw for demolition crews, remodelers, plumbers, electricians, and general contractors. This is a reciprocating saw designed for demolition, rough cutting, and remodeling tear-out. Model Number DCS389B is sold as a bare tool with one blade, for users already running FLEXVOLT batteries.

Power is the headline. DEWALT rates the DCS389 at 1,874 unit watts out (UWO) and says it delivers the power of a corded saw with the freedom of cordless. DEWALT also rates it at up to 19% more power than its earlier 60V MAX recip saw; that comparison was measured with the DCS389 on a DCB609 FLEXVOLT 9.0Ah battery against the older saw on a DCB606 FLEXVOLT 6.0Ah battery. On the job, that output shows up as a saw that keeps its stroke speed when the blade hits nails, knots, or thick-wall pipe.

The 0 to 3,000 SPM speed range and 1-1/8" stroke length work together. A long stroke uses more of the blade's teeth on every pass and clears chips out of the kerf, while the high stroke rate keeps the cut moving. The variable-speed trigger lets you start slowly to establish the cut in metal or at an awkward angle, then squeeze for full speed once the blade is tracking.

DEWALT kept the controls simple. The pivoting shoe gives you leverage against the work in different applications and keeps the saw planted so the blade does not hop. The keyless lever-action blade clamp makes blade changes quick, which matters during demo when you go from wood framing to metal pipe in the same hour. An LED lights the cut line in basements, crawlspaces, and wall cavities, and a rubber overmold grip adds comfort and hold.

This is a full-size saw. At about 8.64 lbs bare and roughly 19" long, it is built for two-handed demolition and heavy cutting, not one-handed work under a sink. That size is the tradeoff for the power, and for demo crews and remodelers it is the right trade.

The saw runs on all DEWALT 20V/60V MAX FLEXVOLT batteries. Those 20V/60V packs also run DEWALT 20V MAX tools, so one set of batteries covers both. Because this is a tool-only package, battery and charger are sold separately, so plan on DEWALT FLEXVOLT batteries if you are new to the platform.

Who should buy it? Contractors and demolition crews who want corded-class cutting power without an extension cord, remodelers doing tear-out, plumbers and electricians cutting pipe, conduit, and framing in existing structures, and serious DIYers already invested in FLEXVOLT.

Pro Tip

Press the pivoting shoe firmly against the work before you pull the trigger, and start at low speed. On a saw with this much output, keeping the shoe planted is what stops the blade from bucking and chattering, especially in metal.
