Key Features

18 oz Head The 18 ounce head gives you enough mass for general hammering without jumping straight to an oversized framing hammer. That makes it a practical middle ground for everyday shop, home, and light jobsite use. Steel Smooth Face This smooth face steel hammer is built for clean striking where you do not want a milled face pattern left behind. It is a better fit for finish-sensitive work and general-purpose driving than a rough framing face. Hickory Handle Feel The hickory handle gives you the traditional feel a lot of hammer users still prefer. It offers a familiar grip and natural feedback that many carpenters and serious DIYers like better than all-steel designs.

Overview

The Boss Hammers BH18STHI16S Armed Forces 18oz Steel Smooth Face Hammer with Hickory Handle is a general-purpose striking tool for users who want a traditional wood-handle setup with a clean-hitting face. This is a hammer designed for driving nails and handling everyday carpentry and repair work. Model Number: BH18STHI16S. If you want a hammer that lands between lightweight finish models and heavier framing hammers, the 18 ounce class is a smart place to start.

The biggest practical detail here is the smooth steel face. A smooth face hammer is the right call when you want solid contact without leaving the crosshatched marks that a milled face can leave on finished or visible material. That matters for punch-list work, trim-adjacent tasks, shop use, and general fastening where a cleaner strike is more important than maximum bite on framing nails.

The steel head gives this Boss Hammers model the durability you expect in a real working hammer. Steel matters because the face and striking end take repeated impact, and this is the part of the tool that needs to hold up under regular use. Paired with an 18 ounce head weight, you get a balance of control and driving power that works well for a wide range of hammering jobs instead of being locked into one narrow use case.

The hickory handle is another key part of why someone would choose this model over a fiberglass or all-metal hammer. Hickory remains popular for a reason: it gives the tool a classic in-hand feel and a more traditional response on contact. A lot of users simply work more naturally with a wood handle, especially if they grew up using one. For repetitive striking, that familiar feel can make the tool easier to place accurately.

The Armed Forces version gives this hammer a distinct identity within the Boss Hammers lineup. If you are buying for daily use, that matters less than the core build, but it does make this model stand out from a plain utility hammer. For plenty of buyers, it is a way to get a working tool with some personality without giving up the basic features that actually matter on the bench or on the job.

This Boss Hammers hammer makes the most sense for carpentry, general repairs, woodworking, shop use, and serious DIY work where a smooth face is the better fit. It is a good option for users who want a real hickory-handle hammer, prefer straightforward steel-head durability, and need one tool that can cover a lot of common striking and fastening tasks without feeling overbuilt or too specialized.
