Overview

The Woodpeckers PCOMPXL24 Pocket Compass XL is a precision woodworking layout tool built for drawing circles and arcs from 2 inches to 21 inches in diameter. This is a beam compass designed for circle and arc layout on flat workpieces. Model Number: PCOMPXL24. If you need a cleaner, more controlled way to mark round parts, cutouts, and curved layouts than a traditional divider compass, this tool solves that problem in a smart way.

The big difference is how it works on the bench. Instead of balancing a long compass on two points and hoping it does not walk across the surface, the Pocket Compass XL lies flat on your material while you mark. That matters because you can keep the pivot set, guide the pencil smoothly, and even change your grip mid-mark without losing your place. For woodworking layout, that means less slipping, fewer scratched surfaces, and more confidence when you are marking expensive stock.

Woodpeckers machines the Pocket Compass XL from aluminum on CNC equipment, then adds an anodized finish for corrosion and wear resistance. The laser-engraved graduations are marked in both inch and metric, which makes the tool easier to use no matter how you work. Woodpeckers also states an accuracy of plus or minus .004 inch total accumulated error over the length of the scales. On a layout tool, that is the kind of spec that actually matters because it tells you the scale is not just there for convenience. It is there to be trusted.

The two-piece body adjusts to the measurement you need, and the stainless-steel pivot pin stores in the tool when not in use. That built-in storage is a practical touch. Small layout accessories have a habit of disappearing in a drawer or on a bench, and keeping the pivot pin with the tool means it is ready when you need it. The setup is straightforward: set the measurement, place the pivot at your center point, drop a pencil through the matching hole, and sweep your line.

For shop use, the XL range is what makes this version especially useful. A 2 inch to 21 inch diameter span covers a lot of common woodworking jobs, including round tabletops, speaker openings, decorative arcs, curved trim layouts, and general bench layout work. It gives you more reach than the standard Pocket Compass without turning into a bulky beam compass that is awkward to store or carry.

The Woodpeckers PCOMPXL24 Pocket Compass XL is made in Strongsville, Ohio, and carefully inspected there as part of Woodpeckers' regular production line. That fits the brand's reputation for layout and measuring tools aimed at woodworkers who care about repeatability and clean fit-up. If you build furniture, cabinetry, jigs, templates, or custom pieces where a sloppy radius turns into a sloppy finished part, this tool earns its keep quickly.

This layout tool makes the most sense for woodworkers, cabinetmakers, furniture builders, and serious hobbyists who want a more controlled alternative to old-school divider compasses. If your work regularly includes circle layout, arc marking, or radius transfer, the Pocket Compass XL is the kind of tool that saves time because it is easier to set, easier to hold, and easier to trust.

Pro Tip

When you are laying out a larger circle, keep light downward pressure on the body and regrip as needed instead of trying to finish the sweep in one motion. The flat-on-the-work design is made for that, and it helps you keep the pivot set without the layout wandering.
