Key Features

Extra Bold Line The premium braided line lays down a bold 1/16" (1.0 mm) snap line that is easier to see when you are working across subfloor, framing lumber, or other rough surfaces. Built for Abuse A heavy-duty aluminum case with a non-slip grip gives this layout tool the toughness and control you want when it is getting tossed in a pouch or used all day on site. Fast Refills and Rewinds The large fill neck and FastWind system cut down on downtime, so the Tajima chalk line is quicker to refill and reset between layout marks.

Overview

The Tajima CR401S Chalk-Rite Dura 1/16" (1 mm) Chalk Line is an extra heavy-duty layout tool built for clean, visible snap lines on real jobsite surfaces. This is a chalk line designed for layout work in carpentry, construction, and general jobsite marking. Model Number: CR401S. If you need a line that is easy to see and a case that can take daily use, this one is built with that in mind.

What matters most here is the line itself. Tajima uses a premium braided nylon and polyester line that creates an extra bold 1/16" (1.0 mm) mark. That thicker line helps when you are snapping reference lines across subfloor, sheathing, concrete-adjacent surfaces, or dusty material where a thin line can disappear. With a 100 ft length, it gives you enough reach for common framing, flooring, and layout tasks without stepping up to a bulkier reel.

The case is not just there to hold chalk. Tajima calls this a Dura model for a reason. The heavy-duty aluminum body adds durability where cheaper plastic boxes tend to crack, and the non-slip outer grip gives you better control when your hands are dusty or gloved. For a tool that gets dropped, dragged, and stuffed into bags, that kind of construction matters more than fancy wording on the package.

The refill side is well thought out too. A large gasket-sealed fill neck makes adding chalk less messy and helps keep dust where it belongs. That is a small feature until you have used a chalk box that spills all over the truck or leaks in your tool bag. Tajima also builds in its FastWind winding control, which speeds up rewind so you spend less time resetting for the next snap.

On the hook end, the integrated handle release and durable hook hardware are there to make one-person layout easier. That matters when you are stretching long lines and do not want the hook slipping loose right before the snap. For contractors who use a chalk box every day, little details like reliable retention and smooth rewind are what separate a decent layout tool from one you actually want to keep on your belt.

This Tajima CR401S Chalk-Rite Dura 1/16" (1 mm) Chalk Line is a strong fit for carpenters, framers, remodelers, flooring installers, and serious DIY users who are tired of disposable chalk reels. It is not trying to be the lightest option. It is trying to be the one that holds up, marks clearly, and wastes less time during layout. If that sounds like the kind of chalk line you want, this is the practical upgrade.

Snap Lines You Can Actually See

Thin chalk lines are easy to lose on rough material. The bigger 1/16" (1.0 mm) braided line on this chalk box is made to leave a bolder mark, which helps when speed matters and you do not want to re-snap the same line twice.

• Premium braided nylon and polyester line
• Extra bold 1/16" (1.0 mm) line for easier visibility
• 100 ft working length for common framing and layout tasks

Refill Faster, Spill Less

Refilling a chalk box should not turn into a mess. The large fill neck makes it easier to load chalk cleanly, and the gasketed design helps keep the dust inside the case instead of all over your hands and gear.

• Large fill neck for quicker loading
• Gasket-sealed port helps reduce leakage
• Better for frequent use on busy jobsites

Built Like a Real Jobsite Tool

Cheap chalk boxes are fine until they crack, slip, or bind up. This one uses a heavy-duty aluminum case with a non-slip grip surface, so it is better suited for daily carpentry and construction layout work.

• Heavy-duty aluminum case for durability
• Non-slip grip improves control with gloves or dusty hands
• Integrated handle release supports smoother operation

Hook End That Stays Put

A chalk line is only as useful as the way it anchors. The hook hardware on the CR401S is built for dependable hold at the end of the pull so you can stretch, tension, and snap with less fuss.

• Designed for secure anchoring at the line end
• Works with the heavy-duty body for one-person layout control
• Good fit for repetitive framing and flooring layout

Pro Tip

When you refill the CR401S, do not pack the chalk to the top of the fill neck. Leave a little room so the braided 1/16" (1.0 mm) line can move freely and rewind cleaner, especially when you are snapping a lot of long layout lines in one day.
