Key Features

Infrared, Not Hot Air This infrared paint remover softens paint with IR heat so it lifts off with a scraper, without the scorching and blowing debris that come with a heat gun. Half as Wide At 3-9/16" (90 mm) wide, the Rapid Slim gets into corners and along narrow trim, sash, and casing where the full-size Speedheater can't sit flat. Ready for Windows Scrapers, a putty chisel, an angle support, and a storage box come in the kit, so you can start stripping and reglazing the day it arrives.

Overview

The Speedheater Rapid Slim Infrared (IR) Paint Remover is a compact infrared heater kit for restoration carpenters, painters, window restorers, and homeowners taking on old paint. This is an infrared paint remover designed for softening and removing paint, varnish, and glazing putty from wood, concrete, and most other surfaces, inside and out. Model Number 3-9120-US-ISD pairs the Rapid Slim heater with scrapers, a putty chisel, an angle support, and a storage box.

Infrared heat works differently from a heat gun. Instead of blowing a stream of very hot air at the surface, the IR tubes warm the paint layers directly until they soften and release, and you follow behind with a scraper. The result is quieter, cleaner work with less risk of scorching the wood underneath. Speedheater describes the process as fast, safe, and environmentally friendly, and it is the same approach used across all Speedheater infrared paint removers.

The same heat handles more than paint. The Rapid Slim also loosens glue residue and varnish, and it softens both old, hardened window putty and modern rubber-like glazing compounds. That makes it a strong choice for sash restoration, where you are fighting paint and putty on the same part, and for furniture renovation where you want to strip a finish without solvents.

What sets the Rapid Slim apart is the shape. It is a slimmer, more efficient version of the Speedheater Standard, roughly half as wide at 3-9/16" (90 mm). Narrowing the heating surface concentrates the infrared energy on a smaller area, so paint softens faster where the tool sits, and the narrow body reaches into corners, along window muntins, and down trim boards that a wider heater would overhang. It is still very effective on straight, flat surfaces like large window frames, facade boards, and joinery.

The heater uses two 550 W infrared tubes for 1,100 W total, and built-in overheat protection keeps the internal components from running too hot. At about 3.1 lbs (1,400 g), it is light enough to hold against a wall or window frame for long stretches, and the included angle support lets you set it down on a work surface and keep heating while your hands are free for the scraper.

The kit is set up for real restoration work. You get a boomerang scraper for concave and flat profiles, a putty scraper and putty chisel for removing glazing compound from window sash, the angle support, and a Speedheater storage box to keep it all together. If your project includes clapboard siding or detailed moldings, the Speedheater paint and finish scrapers add profiles matched to those surfaces.

Who should buy it? Window restorers, preservation carpenters, painters doing exterior prep on older homes, and serious DIYers renovating doors, windows, and furniture. If most of your work is detailed trim, sash, and tight corners, the Rapid Slim is the better pick over the wider Standard model.

Work in a rhythm: heat the next section while you scrape the one you just softened. Once you find the timing for the paint you are removing, the heater never sits idle and the scraper never waits.

Tool Nut's Take

Tool Nut's Take

The Speedheater Rapid Slim Infrared (IR) Paint Remover Is the Window Restorer's Heater

If your paint removal happens on sash, trim, and casing more than open walls, the slimmer Rapid Slim gets heat exactly where you need it.

• Who it's for: Window restorers, preservation carpenters, and painters stripping old finishes from detailed woodwork.
• Why it stands out: Half the width of the Standard model with concentrated infrared heat, plus a kit built around putty and paint removal.
• Worth knowing: For large, open siding jobs, the wider Standard covers more area per placement. Scraper blades wear, so plan on keeping replacements on hand.

Common Questions

• What surfaces can it strip? It removes paint from most surfaces, including wood and concrete, and also lifts varnish and glue residue.
• Will it remove window glazing putty? Yes. It softens both old hard putty and modern rubber-like putty, and a putty scraper and chisel are included.
• How is it different from the Speedheater Standard? The Rapid Slim is about half as wide, which concentrates the heat and fits corners and narrow trim better.
