Overview

The SKIL HD6294B-00 PWR CORE 20 Brushless 20V 1/2 In. Compact Hammer Drill is a cordless hammer drill built for drilling, fastening, and light masonry work in a compact format. This is a hammer drill designed for drilling holes, driving fasteners, and hammer drilling into materials like brick, concrete, and hardwood. Model Number: HD6294B-00. If you want one drill that can handle everyday install work, punch through tough material when needed, and still stay easy to carry, this is the point of this tool.

SKIL built this model around a digital brushless motor that delivers up to 450 in-lbs of torque. On the job, that matters because the tool has enough muscle for common wood drilling and fastening tasks without feeling oversized. The 2-speed transmission gives you a lower range of 0-500 RPM for controlled driving and a higher range of 0-1,800 RPM for faster drilling. Add the variable speed trigger, and you get better control starting screws, boring cleaner holes, or easing into delicate material without stripping heads or walking the bit.

Where this compact hammer drill separates itself from a basic drill driver is the ability to switch between screwdriver mode, drill mode, and hammer drill mode. That makes it useful for punch-list work, maintenance, remodeling, and general repair where you may go from driving cabinet screws to drilling studs to setting a few anchors in brick or block. SKIL rates it at up to 27,000 impacts per minute, which is the spec that helps when you need percussion action for tougher material. It is not pretending to be a rotary hammer, but for light anchoring and small hole drilling in masonry, that hammer function is what saves you from grabbing another tool.

The bit interface is set up for real day-to-day use, not just shelf specs. The 1/2 inch keyless single-sleeve ratcheting chuck gives you wider bit compatibility and quicker swaps when you move between twist bits, masonry bits, and driver bits. A ratcheting metal chuck matters because it holds better under repeated load than cheaper chucks that can loosen up during harder drilling. If you are bouncing between tasks, that saves time and cuts down on re-tightening.

Control is another strong point here. The 17+1+1 clutch settings give you a broad adjustment range for fastening work, plus dedicated drill and hammer modes. In plain terms, that means you can dial back torque for smaller fasteners and finish work, then step up when you need more drive force. For anyone doing mixed work around the house, on a remodel, or on service calls, that adjustability makes the tool more useful than a one-speed, one-mode drill that is always a little too aggressive or a little too weak.

SKIL also put effort into jobsite practicality. The built-in strip LED worklight provides broader illumination than a small pinpoint light and includes pre-light, after-glow, and up to 10 minutes of worklight runtime. That is genuinely useful when you are reaching into a panel cavity, drilling under a sink, or working in a utility room where shadows make it harder to keep the bit centered. Good lighting sounds minor until you use it in a cramped space and realize it keeps you from missing the mark.

System-wise, this tool runs on the SKIL PWR CORE 20 battery platform and is compatible with any PWR CORE 20 battery. That matters if you are already on SKIL cordless tools or plan to add more later, because one battery system keeps cost and clutter down. SKIL also highlights battery features on the platform side, including cooling material around each cell for longer runtime and battery life. This HD6294B-00 version is the tool-only configuration, so it is a smart buy for users who already own PWR CORE 20 batteries and chargers and just need the drill.

Who is this for? It makes the most sense for homeowners who want a serious step up from entry-level cordless tools, remodelers who need a compact drill/driver that can also handle light masonry, and tradespeople looking for a lighter backup or service drill. If you mostly work in wood and fasteners but occasionally need to drill into brick, mortar, or block, this kind of cordless hammer drill is a practical middle ground. You get compact size, brushless efficiency, a real 1/2 inch chuck, and enough mode flexibility to cover a lot of ground without carrying three separate tools.

Compact Size for Tight Work

A compact drill is easier to live with when the job puts you between studs, under counters, or up on a ladder. This one keeps the size manageable while still giving you the control you need for both fastening and drilling.

• 17+1+1 settings help match output to the fastener and material
• Variable speed trigger gives better starts and less overdriving

Handle Wood, Fasteners, and Masonry

The hammer function is what turns this from a basic drill driver into a more useful all-around jobsite tool. For light masonry drilling in brick, block, or mortar, you can stay with one cordless platform instead of reaching for a separate corded drill for every anchor hole.

• Up to 27,000 impacts per minute for hammer drilling action
• Three operating modes: screwdriver, drill, and hammer drill

See the Work Area Better

The strip LED worklight is more than a checkbox feature. It spreads light across the work zone, which helps you keep the bit lined up in dark corners and utility spaces where bad visibility usually slows the job down.

• Pre-light and after-glow improve visibility before and after trigger pull
• Worklight can stay on for up to 10 minutes when needed
