Key Features

Flanged Support The bent flange adds stiffness and support where a flat repair plate can fall short. That matters when you are splicing members or reinforcing a connection that needs a little more backbone. TPA39 Tie Plate Coverage At 3-1/2 inches wide by 9 inches long, this tie plate gives you more contact area for wood-to-wood reinforcing jobs. That extra length helps when you need a broader splice across adjoining members. Staggered Fastener Pattern The hole layout is designed for a secure connection that resists splitting. You get plenty of fastening points without crowding everything into one straight line.

Overview

The Simpson Strong-Tie TPA39 TPA 3-1/2-in. x 9-in. 20-Gauge Galvanized Tie Plate is a flanged steel connector made for reinforcing and splicing wood members. This is a tie plate designed for splicing and reinforcing wood-to-wood connections. Model Number TPA39. If you are tying framing members together, backing up a repair, or strengthening a basic wood connection, this plate gives you a simple mechanical way to do it with standard connector fasteners.

What makes the TPA39 different from a basic flat plate is the flange. That formed edge adds support and helps the plate resist bending better than a simple flat strap in the same kind of application. On the job, that means better stability when you are reinforcing a splice or trying to stiffen a connection that sees movement during assembly or service.

The 3-1/2 inch width and 9 inch length give this Simpson Strong-Tie tie plate useful coverage across the joint. It is large enough to bridge common framing connections without being oversized for routine repairs and reinforcement work. The plate is made from 20-gauge steel, which keeps it easy to handle and install while still giving you a solid steel connector for light structural reinforcement work where a plate connector is the right fit.

Simpson Strong-Tie uses a staggered nail pattern here for a practical reason. Fasteners are spread across the plate in a way that helps create a secure connection while reducing the chance of splitting the wood from an overly concentrated line of nails or screws. That is the kind of detail that matters more in real lumber than it does on paper, especially when you are working near ends, joints, or patched sections.

The galvanized G90 finish helps the TPA39 hold up better in typical construction environments than bare steel. For interior framing, general wood reinforcement, and similar applications, that coating adds corrosion resistance and makes the plate a better fit for jobsite storage and everyday use. As always, coating choice should match the job conditions, but for standard wood construction work this finish is the expected starting point.

Installation is straightforward. The holes are sized for 0.131 inch x 2-1/2 inch nails, 0.131 inch x 1-1/2 inch nails, or #9 Strong-Drive SD connector screws. That gives you flexibility depending on the member thickness and the way you want to build the connection. Simpson also notes that the listed fastener count represents the total number of fastener holes, so you can plan the connection layout before you start driving hardware.

One important point worth being clear about: Simpson Strong-Tie lists these connectors as not load rated. That means the TPA39 is best used where a versatile reinforcing plate is needed, not where you need a connector with published load values for engineered design. For repairs, reinforcement, splicing, and general wood connection work, it is a handy piece to keep around. For engineered structural capacity, you would want to step into a connector that is specifically load rated for that task.

This wood connector makes the most sense for carpenters, framers, remodelers, and general contractors who need a reliable flanged tie plate for wood framing repairs and reinforcement. Serious DIY users can also put it to good use, especially on shed framing, blocking, non-decorative reinforcement, and practical repair work where strength, fit, and fastener options matter more than appearance.

Extra Support at the Joint

The flange is the big reason to choose this plate over a plain flat connector. It adds support to the plate body, which helps when you are reinforcing a splice or backing up a wood-to-wood connection that needs more rigidity.

• Flanged design adds support beyond a standard flat tie plate
• 20-gauge galvanized steel balances easy handling with everyday jobsite durability

Pro Tip

If you are reinforcing a splice, choose your fastener length based on the member thickness before you start filling holes. The TPA39 accepts both 1-1/2 inch and 2-1/2 inch nails, so you can match the hardware to the build instead of forcing one setup on every connection.
