Key Features

Built for Wood to Steel This wood-to-steel screw is made to bore through a wood member and fasten into steel up to 15/32 inch thick. That saves a step on structural fastening jobs where regular wood screws are out of their depth. Secure T30 Drive The T30 6-lobe recess gives the bit a solid seat, which helps reduce cam-out and keeps control better when driving into steel. Simpson Strong-Tie also includes a driver bit in the box. Flush Structural Finish A flat head with nibs helps the screw countersink cleanly into wood while improving pull-through resistance. You get a neater finished surface and a connection designed for real load-bearing work.

Overview

Simpson Strong-Tie TFP1475R50 Strong-Drive TF WOOD-TO-STEEL Screw is a load-rated structural fastener for connecting wood to steel. This is a wood-to-steel screw designed for fastening wood members to steel members. Model number TFP1475R50 is the black phosphate version in a 50-count box, sized #14 x 3 in. with a T30 6-lobe drive.

What matters here is how this screw is built to do the whole job in one fastener. The #5 drill point with wings is designed to bore through the wood member before the point engages the steel, and the self-tapping threads then bite into the steel member for a secure hold. For installers working on wood-to-metal framing, brackets, or structural connections, that means fewer extra steps and less messing around with separate drilling and fastening.

The head design is just as important as the point. Simpson Strong-Tie uses a flat head with nibs so the screw pulls down clean and countersinks into wood more easily. That helps the head sit flush instead of standing proud, and it improves pull-through resistance at the surface of the wood member. On finish-sensitive structural work, that makes for a cleaner install without giving up holding strength.

The drive system is a practical choice too. A T30 6-lobe recess holds the bit more securely than a basic cross recess when you are leaning on the driver and pushing into steel. That means better bit engagement, less chance of stripping the recess, and more control when the screw starts cutting. Simpson Strong-Tie notes that a driver bit is included in each box, and the replacement bit model is BIT30T-S2-R1.

For this specific SKU, the coating is black phosphate. Simpson Strong-Tie is very clear about where that matters: this hardened fastener is intended for dry, interior, noncorrosive environments only. If you are fastening in wet, exterior, or corrosive conditions, this is not the version to reach for. That kind of straight answer matters because coating choice is not cosmetic on structural fasteners, it decides where the screw belongs.

Size and geometry are set up for heavier fastening work. This screw is 3 inches long with a 0.460 inch head diameter, 14 threads per inch, and a maximum grip length of 1.94 inches. Simpson Strong-Tie lists it for wood-to-steel fastening with a maximum recommended steel thickness of 1/4 inch to 15/32 inch. In plain terms, this is not a light-duty sheet metal screw. It is a structural fastener meant for wood members into thicker steel than common jobsite screws can handle.

The best buyer for this fastener is someone who already knows the job calls for a structural wood-to-steel connection and wants the right head style, point design, and drive system for that work. It makes sense for contractors, framers, builders, and serious remodelers dealing with steel-backed structural details. If your work happens indoors and dry, and you need a hand-drive screw that cuts wood, taps steel, and finishes flush in one shot, this is the version to look at.

Drill Through Wood, Then Bite Into Steel

This fastener is built around a point design that handles mixed materials the right way. The drill point and wings help the screw pass through the wood member before cutting into the steel, so the connection goes together with less prep.

• #5 drill point with wings
• Designed for wood-to-steel fastening
• Maximum recommended steel thickness: 1/4 in. to 15/32 in.

Get a Clean Flush Seat

The flat head with nibs is there for a reason. It helps the screw countersink into the wood member more easily and resist pull-through at the surface, which is exactly what you want on structural fastening where the head has to sit down and stay put.

• Flat head design
• Nibs help with easy countersinking
• Head diameter: 0.460 in.

Drive Hard Without Fighting the Bit

Driving into steel takes steady pressure, and the recess has to hold up. The T30 6-lobe drive gives you a more positive bit fit than a basic recess, which helps when the screw starts tapping steel and torque climbs.

• T30 6-lobe drive type
• Driver bit included in each box
• Replacement bit model: BIT30T-S2-R1

Simpson Strong-Tie TFP1475R50 Strong-Drive TF WOOD-TO-STEEL Screw Gets the Details Right

This is the kind of structural screw that earns its keep by doing wood-to-steel fastening cleanly, with a proper drill point, a flush head, and a drive recess that does not quit when things get tight.

• Who it's for: Pros and serious builders fastening wood members to steel indoors where a structural, load-rated screw is the right call.
• Why it stands out: The combination of a #5 drill point with wings, self-tapping threads, and a flat head with nibs means it is built for the actual sequence of the job, not just for spinning into material.
• Worth knowing: This black phosphate version is for dry, interior, noncorrosive environments only. If the job is outside or exposed to moisture, you need to step up to the right coating.
