Key Features

Brace the Structure The Simpson Strong-Tie KBS1Z Knee Brace Stabilizer ties knee bracing to posts, beams, and columns to help stabilize freestanding structures. That matters on deck and fence builds where bracing is doing real work, not just filling space. Exterior-Ready Steel Built from 16-gauge steel with a ZMAX coating, this connector is made for outdoor use and treated wood applications where corrosion resistance matters over time. Adjust for Angle If your installation is not at 45 degrees, the KBS1Z can be bent along the slots to the needed angle. That gives you more flexibility when field conditions are not perfectly standard.

Overview

The Simpson Strong-Tie KBS1Z Knee Brace Stabilizer is a steel wood connector used to create a structural connection between knee bracing and a post, beam, or column. This is a knee brace stabilizer designed for reinforcing and stabilizing freestanding wood structures such as decks, fences, and similar framed outdoor assemblies. Model Number: KBS1Z. If you are building exterior bracing and want a cleaner, purpose-built fastening point than improvised hardware, this is the part meant for that job.

What makes this connector useful is that it is built around the real geometry of knee braces. It is not just a flat strap or a general-purpose angle bracket. The formed shape supports brace-to-post and brace-to-beam connections in a way that helps the structure resist movement while meeting deck bracing requirements. For equal-width members, Simpson specifies using two KBS1Z stabilizers on each end of the brace. For a 2x knee brace, a single KBS1Z goes on each end of the brace. That gives installers clear direction instead of guessing at layout in the field.

The KBS1Z is made from 16-gauge steel, which gives it the stiffness needed for this kind of structural connector without making it bulky or difficult to place. The ZMAX coating adds corrosion resistance for exterior and treated-wood applications, which is a big deal on deck and fence work where moisture exposure is constant and standard unfinished hardware is a short-term solution. Homeowners may only notice the finished structure, but pros know the connector coating is what keeps call-backs down years later.

Another practical advantage is angle flexibility. Standard knee brace layouts are often shown at 45 degrees, but actual site conditions do not always line up that neatly. Simpson notes that for installations at an angle other than 45 degrees, the KBS1Z can be bent along the slots to the desired angle, one time only. That lets you adapt the connector to the job instead of redesigning the whole brace layout around a fixed-angle part.

Installation details are straightforward and matter here. The connector is installed with specified fasteners, and Simpson notes compatibility with 8d or 8d by 1-1/2 inch nails. The product is also approved in many applications for Strong-Drive SD Connector screws, with the published load table noting that #9 x 1-1/2 inch Strong-Drive SD Connector screws may be substituted for specified fasteners with no load reduction. Fasteners are not included, so you can choose the approved fastening method that fits your build and stock on hand.

In use, the KBS1Z is suited to deck bracing, fence and outdoor wood framing, and other freestanding structural wood connections where a knee brace is part of the design. It can also be used in alternate post cap style applications in pairs, though Simpson is clear that in that use it serves as a column cap connection and does not replace a knee brace. That kind of application-specific guidance is what separates a real structural connector from a generic bracket.

This is a good fit for deck builders, carpenters, remodelers, and serious DIY users working on outdoor wood structures who want a connector engineered for brace stabilization instead of piecing together a solution from angles and straps. If your job includes treated lumber, exposed weather, and structural bracing that needs to stay put, the Simpson Strong-Tie KBS1Z Knee Brace Stabilizer is the right kind of hardware to start with.

Built for Real Knee Brace Connections

This connector is made for the part of the structure that takes the racking load and helps keep the frame from walking over time. On deck and freestanding wood framing, that means a more confident brace connection where the post and beam meet the diagonal member.

• Designed to connect knee bracing to columns or beams
• Helps comply with deck bracing requirements for safety

Handles Outdoor Conditions Better

Outdoor connectors need more than shape and strength. They need a finish that makes sense for treated lumber and weather exposure. The ZMAX coating is there for exactly that reason.

• 16-gauge steel body for structural connector duty
• ZMAX coating adds corrosion resistance for exterior and treated-wood applications

Flexible When the Angle Is Not Standard

Not every brace lands at a perfect 45 degrees. Simpson designed this part so it can be bent along the slots to fit other installation angles when needed, which makes field fitting a lot less frustrating.

• Can be bent for angles other than 45 degrees
• Bend one time only per manufacturer guidance
