Key Features

Adjustable Fit The slotted anchor hole gives you some room to fine-tune post placement around the anchor bolt, which helps when layout is close but not perfect. Built-In Standoff The 1 inch standoff lifts the wood post off the concrete, helping meet code requirements where splash, weather, or basement moisture are part of the job. ABA24-2Z Post Base This adjustable post base is sized for a double 2x4 post and made from 16 gauge steel with a ZMAX finish for deck and post-to-footing work.

Overview

The Simpson Strong-Tie ABA24-2Z Adjustable Standoff Post Base is a retrofit post base for attaching a double 2x4 wood post to existing concrete. This is a post base designed for post-to-footing connections in deck and similar structural framing work. Model Number ABA24-2Z. If you need a clean way to anchor a wood post while keeping it lifted off the concrete, this is the part that handles that job.

What matters most here is adjustability. The slot in the base gives you flexibility around the anchor bolt, so you are not fighting a fixed hole when the concrete anchor lands a little off center. On a real job, that saves time during layout and helps you get the post where it needs to be without reworking the footing connection.

The built-in 1 inch standoff is not just a detail on a drawing. It keeps the end of the wood post up off the concrete, which helps with moisture exposure and supports code-driven installation requirements in basements or areas exposed to weather or splash. That makes this connector a practical choice for outdoor framing where long-term contact with damp concrete can shorten the life of the post.

For the ABA24-2Z specifically, Simpson Strong-Tie sizes the connector for a double 2x4 post and builds it from 16 gauge steel. The connector dimensions are 3-1/8 inches wide, 3-3/8 inches long, and 3-1/8 inches high. It uses a 1/2 inch anchor diameter and installs to the post with (6) 0.148 x 3 inch nails. Those details matter because they define what fits, what hardware you need, and what kind of load path you are building.

The ZMAX finish is another reason this one gets specified for exterior and deck work. Simpson Strong-Tie uses that finish where corrosion resistance matters more than it does on basic interior framing connectors. If the post base is living near moisture, treated lumber, or weather exposure, that finish matters because the connector is the one piece you do not want rusting out at the base.

Load performance is also a real selling point. Allowable loads for the ABA24-2Z are 630 lb uplift and 5,925 lb download for DF/SP conditions, and Simpson Strong-Tie specifically calls out increased uplift loads for earthquake or wind loading. That makes this adjustable post base more than just a spacer at the bottom of a post. It is part of the structural connection strategy.

Installation is straightforward, but it is not a connector you use everywhere. Simpson Strong-Tie notes that post bases do not provide enough resistance to keep members from rotating about the base, so they are not recommended for non-top-supported installations such as fences or unbraced carports. In other words, use it where the post is tied into a braced, supported structure, not where the base is expected to do all the stabilizing by itself.

This connector is best suited to deck builders, remodelers, general contractors, and serious DIY users working on code-conscious post connections to concrete. If you are setting a double 2x4 post on an existing footing and want adjustability, uplift capability, and the moisture benefit of a standoff design, the ABA24-2Z is the right kind of hardware for that job.

Set the Post Where You Need It

When the anchor is already in the concrete, small layout adjustments matter. The slotted base opening gives you a little working room so post placement is easier and cleaner during final fit-up.

• Designed to attach wood posts to existing concrete
• Slotted anchor hole helps with precise post placement around the anchor bolt

Keep Wood Off the Concrete

The 1 inch standoff is the kind of feature that pays off long after the job is done. It separates the post from the concrete surface, which is important in wet locations, splash zones, and basement installs.

• 1 inch standoff design helps meet code requirements for structural posts exposed to moisture conditions
• Useful for decks and other post-to-footing applications where water management matters

Pro Tip

Before you tighten everything down, make sure the base anchor projects less than 1 inch above the concrete. Simpson Strong-Tie calls that out so the anchor does not interfere with the standoff and final fit.

Tool Nut's Take

Tool Nut's Take

Simpson Strong-Tie ABA24-2Z Adjustable Standoff Post Base Keeps a Small Layout Problem from Becoming a Big Install Problem

This is a smart connector for builders who want a post base that gives them adjustment at the anchor and keeps the wood up off the concrete.

• Who it's for: Deck builders, remodelers, and contractors setting double 2x4 posts on existing concrete footings.
• Why it stands out: The combination of a slotted anchor hole, built-in 1 inch standoff, and solid uplift capacity makes it more useful than a basic fixed post base.
• Worth knowing: Like other post bases, it is not meant to stop a post from rotating by itself, so use it in top-supported, properly braced assemblies.

Common Questions

• What size post does this fit? The ABA24-2Z is sized for a double 2x4 wood post.
• Can this be used on existing concrete? Yes. Simpson Strong-Tie describes the ABA series as designed to attach wooden posts to existing concrete.
• Why does this post base have a standoff? The built-in 1 inch standoff lifts the post off the concrete to help meet code requirements where moisture exposure is a concern.
• Is this a good choice for a free-standing fence post or unbraced carport? No. Simpson Strong-Tie states that post bases do not provide adequate resistance to prevent rotation and are not recommended for non-top-supported installations.
