Key Features

Cleaner Starts The 135 degree split point tip starts where you place it instead of skating across the surface. That means faster, more accurate holes in metal, wood, and plastic. Built for Jobsite Use A thicker core helps these Milwaukee twist drill bits resist side-load breakage. You get a set that holds up better when the drill is not perfectly straight. Organized and Ready The 21-piece set comes in a customizable accessory case designed for PACKOUT. It keeps sizes sorted and makes it easier to grab the right bit without digging through a loose pile.

Overview

Milwaukee 48-89-2801 21-Piece Thunderbolt Black Oxide Drill Bit Set is a general-purpose twist drill bit set built for drilling metal, wood, and plastics with a standard drill driver. This is a twist drill bit set designed for general-purpose drilling and everyday jobsite hole making. Model Number: 48-89-2801. If you need one case that covers common sizes from small pilot holes up through larger openings, this set gives you a practical spread from 1/16 inch to 1/2 inch.

The big selling point here is control at the start of the hole. Milwaukee uses a 135 degree split point tip, which helps the bit bite faster and reduces walking on the material surface. On the job, that matters most when you are drilling sheet metal, aluminum, copper, PVC, or hardwood where a wandering bit can throw off layout lines or scar the work. It is a simple feature, but it saves time and frustration because you spend less effort forcing the bit to track straight.

Milwaukee also builds these THUNDERBOLT black oxide bits with a thicker core to resist breakage. That is important in real use because drill bits rarely live an easy life. They get leaned on, run hot, and sometimes loaded from the side when you're reaching into awkward spots. The thicker core helps the bit stay intact longer, especially in the smaller sizes that usually snap first. The parabolic flute design also clears chips and debris quickly, which helps keep the bit cutting instead of rubbing and generating unnecessary heat.

The black oxide finish is not just there for looks. It helps reduce heat build-up and improves corrosion resistance, which makes sense for a set that may live in a truck box, gang box, or crowded organizer. Milwaukee also adds its 3-Flat Secure-Grip shank design to help prevent slipping in the chuck. That becomes more useful as you move into the larger sizes, where a smooth shank can start spinning under load if the chuck is not tightened perfectly. In plain terms, the bits stay put better and transfer the drill's power more consistently.

This set is designed for use with drill drivers, and the included case is made to work with PACKOUT organizers. That makes it a good fit for users already on Milwaukee's storage platform, but it is still useful even if you are not. The case keeps the 21 pieces organized by size, which cuts down on time wasted hunting for a specific bit. For service work, punch-list tasks, maintenance, metal stud work, duct installation, and general shop use, that kind of organization is worth more than people think.

Who should buy it? Contractors, maintenance techs, electricians, HVAC installers, remodelers, and serious DIY users who want a dependable general-purpose drill bit set rather than a specialty metal-only or wood-only kit. If you drill a mix of materials and want common sizes in one compact case, this Milwaukee set makes sense. If you mainly drill very hard metals every day, you would step up to a more specialized cobalt set. For everyday use across common materials, this is the practical middle ground.

Milwaukee 48-89-2801 21-Piece Thunderbolt Black Oxide Drill Bit Set Gets the Everyday Stuff Right

This is the kind of drill bit set that earns a spot in the truck because it covers the sizes you actually use and adds features that help bits last longer in real work.

• Who it's for: Anyone running a drill driver for service work, installation, repair, shop tasks, or general drilling across metal, wood, and plastics.
• Why it stands out: The split point tip, thicker core, parabolic flute, and 3-flat shank are all practical upgrades that matter more than flashy packaging.
• Worth knowing: This is a general-purpose black oxide set, not a hard-metal specialty kit. If you mainly drill tough alloys all day, go cobalt. If you need one dependable all-around set, this one makes a lot of sense.
