Ball End AccessBall ends let you reach hex fasteners from a difficult angle, which helps when straight-on access is blocked by surrounding parts. Faster Size GrabThe pivoting holder and offset key layout make it easier to pull the size you need without fighting a tight case or dumping loose keys on the bench. Built For TorqueHeat-treated alloy steel keys with a black oxide finish are made to hold up under repeated use, resist rust, and handle more torque in tough shop and jobsite conditions.

Overview

The Milwaukee 48-22-2187 22-Key Ball End L-Key Set - SAE/Metric is a 22-piece hex key set built for grabbing the right size quickly and reaching fasteners that are awkward to access with a standard straight key. This is a hex key set designed for driving and removing internal hex fasteners. Model Number: 48-22-2187. If you want both SAE and metric coverage in one organized setup, this kit gives you the common sizes most users actually need.

This set combines a 13-key SAE holder and a 9-key metric holder, and Milwaukee did the part that usually annoys people with hex keys better than most. The pivoting holder and offset key layout make individual keys easier to grab, so you spend less time digging for the right size. High-contrast size markings on both the holder and the keys also help when you are working in a dim mechanical room, on a service truck, or just trying to move faster at the bench.

The ball end matters because it gives you better angle access on hard-to-reach fasteners. That is the real advantage here. When a screw is tucked behind a bracket, near a housing, or blocked by surrounding hardware, a ball end key can get engaged where a straight end wants a cleaner shot. Milwaukee also uses chamfered ends for easier insertion into the fastener, which helps reduce fumbling when you are switching sizes often.

On durability, these keys are made from heat-treated alloy steel and finished with black oxide to resist rust and corrosion. Milwaukee also calls out higher torque resistance, which is what serious users care about with an L-style hex key set. If a key twists too easily, rounds off, or corrodes in the drawer, it stops being useful fast. This set is built to stay in rotation for regular shop, installation, and maintenance work.

The holder design also helps with storage and transport. A built-in hang hole gives you a simple way to keep the set visible on a wall, cart, or panel system instead of buried in a drawer. At 1.82 lb, it has enough substance to feel like a real shop set, but it is still compact enough to travel easily between the truck, box, and workbench.

Who should buy it? Anyone who regularly works with internal hex fasteners and wants one organized SAE/metric solution instead of a pile of loose Allen keys. It makes the most sense for mechanics, maintenance techs, installers, assembly work, and serious DIY users who are tired of cheap key sets with poor organization and hard-to-read markings.

Grab the Right Key Faster

The holder is the difference between a set you actually use and one that sits in the drawer. Milwaukee's pivoting design and offset key layout make it easier to pull a single key cleanly when you are moving through multiple fastener sizes.

• High-contrast markings on the holder and keys make size identification easier
• Most popular key sizes stay organized in the handle instead of loose in a pouch or tray

Store It Where You Can See It

A good hex key set should stay organized between jobs. The integrated hang hole makes it easy to keep both holders on a wall panel, cart, or shop board so the set is ready when you need it.

• Includes separate SAE and metric holders for quick visual sorting
• Compact footprint helps keep service trucks, benches, and work areas cleaner

Pro Tip

Use the ball end to start or spin fasteners when access is off-angle, then switch to the straight end when you need full engagement for final tightening. That gives you the access advantage without giving up control when torque matters.

Milwaukee 48-22-2187 22-Key Ball End L-Key Set - SAE/Metric gets the basics right

This is the kind of hex key set that earns its keep because it is organized well, reads clearly, and reaches fasteners that cheaper straight-cut sets fight you on.

• Who it's for: Mechanics, maintenance techs, installers, and serious DIY users who need both SAE and metric hex keys in one dependable set.
• Why it stands out: The pivoting holder is actually useful, the ball ends help in cramped spots, and the heat-treated alloy steel construction is what you want in a set that will see regular use.
• Worth knowing: This is an L-style hand tool set, not a ratcheting system. If you want compact storage and direct control, it makes sense. If you want speed over feel, you may still reach for a bit driver first.
