Key Features

Compact Reach At just 6 inches long, this Milwaukee hammer drill/driver kit gets into cabinets, mechanical rooms, and other tight spots where a full-size drill slows you down. Real Drilling Power The POWERSTATE brushless motor and 400 inch-pounds of torque give this subcompact drill the muscle to handle drilling, hammer drilling, and fastener driving without feeling underbuilt. Ready-to-Work Kit You get two M12 batteries, a charger, and a contractor bag, so the kit is ready for the truck, the service call, or the punch list right out of the box.

Overview

The Milwaukee 3404-22 M12 FUEL 1/2-in. Hammer Drill/Driver Kit is a cordless hammer drill/driver kit built for drilling, hammer drilling, and fastening where space is tight but you still need real output. This is a hammer drill/driver kit designed for drilling masonry, wood, and metal and for driving a wide range of fasteners. Model 3404-22 gives you Milwaukee's M12 FUEL subcompact platform in a full kit with the tool, two batteries, charger, and bag, making it a strong fit for electricians, HVAC techs, plumbers, maintenance crews, remodelers, and serious DIY users who want a compact drill that does more than light-duty work.

What makes this one matter is the balance of size and performance. Milwaukee rates it at 400 inch-pounds of torque with a 2-speed transmission that runs from 0 to 450 RPM in low and 0 to 1,550 RPM in high. On the job, that means low gear gives you the control for larger fasteners and tougher drilling, while high gear keeps smaller hole drilling and general driving moving at a good pace. The hammer function adds the ability to drill into masonry, which is a big deal for service trades that bounce between wood framing, sheet metal, anchors, and light concrete or block work in the same day.

The compact body is the other reason this drill stands out. At only 6 inches long and about 2.6 pounds, it is built to get where larger 18-volt drills start fighting you. Working between studs, under sinks, above ceiling grids, inside cabinet boxes, or around installed duct and pipe is easier when the tool is short enough to stay straight on the bit. That shorter length also matters for overhead work and ladder work because it reduces the awkward wrist angle you get with a bulkier drill.

Milwaukee backs the size with the right hard-wearing parts. The 1/2 inch all-metal keyless chuck is built for better grip and bit retention than the lighter-duty chucks you usually see on compact tools, and the all-metal gearcase helps the tool hold up better when it lives in a truck or sees regular daily use. A mechanical clutch with 12 settings gives you more repeatable control when driving screws, which matters when you're working in finish materials, device boxes, hardware installs, or smaller fasteners where overdriving creates extra work.

This kit also makes sense because it is not a stripped-down bare tool. Milwaukee includes an M12 REDLITHIUM XC 4.0 battery for longer runtime, an M12 REDLITHIUM CP 2.0 battery for lighter weight and better balance, the M12 charger, and a contractor bag. That gives you options. Run the larger pack when runtime matters, then switch to the compact pack when you want the shortest, lightest setup for service work or repetitive overhead use. The built-in LED work light and belt clip add the kind of everyday practicality that actually gets used, especially in dim utility spaces and unfinished interiors.

Platform compatibility is another advantage. This drill is part of Milwaukee's M12 system, which includes more than 125 tools. If you are already on M12, the 3404-22 drops right into your existing battery rotation. If you are starting from scratch, this kit is a practical entry point because the included batteries and charger also support expansion into other M12 service-trade tools without forcing you into a bigger platform than the work requires.

Who should buy it? If your priority is maximum power for large hole saws all day in heavy framing, you will still step up to a larger drill platform. But if you need a compact cordless hammer drill that carries easily, fits where bigger tools do not, and still has enough speed, torque, and chuck durability for real daily work, this is exactly the kind of kit that earns a permanent place in the van or on the bench.

Compact Size That Actually Helps on the Job

Short tools are easier to keep square to the work, and that matters more than most spec sheets admit. This drill's 6 inch length helps when you're working between framing members, inside casework, or around installed mechanicals.

• Only 6 inches long for better access in tight spaces
• 2.6 pound tool weight helps reduce fatigue during overhead and ladder work
• Subcompact format is easier to carry on a belt or keep in a service bag

Built to Drill, Drive, and Hold Up

This kit is more than a compact drill with a small battery. Milwaukee paired the tool with durable hardware and a useful battery mix, so you can set it up for either runtime or low weight depending on the task.

• POWERSTATE brushless motor with 400 inch-pounds of torque
• 1/2 inch all-metal keyless chuck for better bit grip and retention

Pro Tip

Use the XC 4.0 battery when you are drilling or hammer drilling for longer stretches, then swap to the CP 2.0 pack when you need the shortest, lightest setup for service calls and overhead work. That is the easiest way to get both runtime and compact handling out of this kit.

Tool Nut's Take

Tool Nut's Take

Why the Milwaukee 3404-22 M12 FUEL 1/2-in. Hammer Drill/Driver Kit Still Makes Sense

This is the kind of compact hammer drill kit that earns its keep because it is small enough to carry every day but strong enough that you are not constantly reaching for a bigger tool.

• Who it's for: Techs, installers, remodelers, and homeowners who want one compact cordless hammer drill/driver for everyday drilling, fastening, and light masonry work.
• Why it stands out: The 6 inch length, brushless motor, 400 inch-pounds of torque, and all-metal chuck give it a better mix of access and durability than a lot of compact drills.
• Worth knowing: This is a complete kit with two batteries and a charger, but it is still an M12 tool. If your day is mostly large-diameter boring or heavy structural work, move up to a larger platform.
