Key Features

Compact 6 Inch BodyWhen you are drilling between studs, inside cabinets, or overhead, size matters. The 6 in length gives this hammer drill driver better access where a full-size drill starts fighting the work area. 400 in-lbs TorqueThis Milwaukee M12 FUEL 1/2 in Hammer Drill Driver Bare Tool has enough twisting force for a wide range of drilling and fastening work. That means fewer stalls and better control when you step up from light-duty tasks. All-Metal ChuckThe 1/2 in all-metal ratcheting chuck is built for grip and durability. It holds bits securely under load, which matters when you are drilling masonry, wood, or metal and do not want bit slip slowing you down.

Overview

The Milwaukee M12 FUEL 1/2 in Hammer Drill Driver Bare Tool, model 3404-20, is a compact cordless drill built for drilling, hammer drilling, and driving fasteners where size and speed both matter. This is a hammer drill driver designed for drilling holes and driving fasteners in wood, metal, and light masonry applications. It is aimed at electricians, service techs, remodelers, punch-list pros, and serious DIY users who want real performance without carrying a larger 18 volt tool for every task.

On paper, the numbers tell a pretty clear story. The POWERSTATE brushless motor delivers up to 400 in-lbs of torque with a 0-1,550 RPM range, giving this subcompact drill the muscle for common drilling and fastening work while still staying easy to manage in close quarters. Milwaukee also gives you 2 speed settings and 12 clutch settings, so you can back off for controlled screwdriving or step up for faster drilling when the material allows it.

The size is what separates this tool from a lot of drills that claim to be compact. At just 6 in long, it is built to reach into stud bays, cabinet interiors, mechanical rooms, and other spots where a longer drill turns a simple job into a knuckle-buster. That short body also makes overhead work less awkward and helps when you are drilling close to corners or obstructions. If you spend your day working around finished surfaces or crowded framing, that compact footprint is not a luxury, it saves time.

Milwaukee did not trim the tool down by cheapening the working parts. The 1/2 in all-metal ratcheting chuck is there for better bit grip and longer life, and the all-metal gearcase is a big plus for a drill that is going to live on a truck, in a gang box, or on a belt. The mechanical clutch matters too. It gives more consistent driving control across a range of fasteners, which is important when you need repeatable results instead of burying screws too deep or stripping them out.

For day-to-day use, this drill is built to stay practical. It weighs about 2.6 lbs overall, which helps with tool belt carry and reduces fatigue during repeated drilling and fastening. The integrated LED light is a small feature until you are inside a dim cabinet, under a sink, or in a mechanical closet. The included belt clip is also worth mentioning because compact drills usually get carried more often than they get set down.

System fit is another reason this tool makes sense. It runs on the Milwaukee M12 battery system, so it is a natural add-on for users already invested in M12 batteries and chargers. Milwaukee also states it is part of the M12 System with over 125+ tools, which matters if you are building around a lighter, service-friendly cordless platform instead of mixing batteries across jobsite tools.

Because this is the bare tool version, it does not include a battery or charger. That is the right buy for someone who already owns M12 packs and wants to expand their setup without paying twice for power sources. If you are new to M12, just know you will need to add a compatible battery and charger before you get to work.

Who should buy it? If you want a compact cordless hammer drill for service work, installation, remodeling, electrical rough-in, cabinet work, light masonry drilling, and general fastening, this one hits a sweet spot. If your work is mostly smaller holes, anchors, hardware install, and everyday drilling where maneuverability matters as much as raw size, the Milwaukee M12 FUEL 1/2 in Hammer Drill Driver Bare Tool is a smart choice.

Compact Size That Actually Helps on the Job

This is the kind of drill you grab when a bigger tool feels like overkill but a weak compact drill will not cut it. The short body, low weight, and full-size 1/2 in chuck make it a strong fit for daily drilling and fastening without taking up extra room on your belt or in your bag.

• Only 6 in long for better access in cabinets, framing bays, and tight corners
• 2.6 lbs overall for easier overhead use and less fatigue through the work day

Pro Tip

If you plan to use the hammer mode often or run larger bits regularly, pair this drill with an M12 REDLITHIUM XC4.0 battery pack. Milwaukee specifically calls out that pack for getting the most runtime in class, and it makes more sense for heavier work than a smaller compact pack.
