Fast Clean Cutting The brushless motor drives the blade at up to 4,000 strokes per minute, so this hedge trimmer cuts quicker through routine shaping and heavier overgrowth without the lag you get from slower units. Easier On Your Arms Anti-vibration design and a rubberized soft grip help keep the Makita hedge trimmer more comfortable during longer trimming sessions, especially when you are working overhead or along long fence lines. No Gas Headaches No pull starts, no fuel mixing, and no engine maintenance. That means less downtime, lower upkeep, and a cordless hedge trimmer that is ready when you are.

Overview

The Makita XHU09Z 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Brushless Cordless 24" Hedge Trimmer is a cordless hedge trimmer built for trimming, shaping, and maintaining hedges, shrubs, and taller landscape growth without dragging a cord or dealing with gas-engine upkeep. This is a hedge trimmer designed for fast hedge and shrub cutting in residential and professional landscape work. Model Number: XHU09Z. If you already run Makita outdoor power equipment or 18V LXT tools, this bare tool makes a lot of sense because it drops right into that battery platform.

Where this tool earns its keep is cutting speed and usable reach. Makita pairs a 24 inch dual-action, double-sided steel blade with a brushless motor that delivers up to 4,000 strokes per minute on high speed. In practical terms, that gives you quicker passes on hedge faces and cleaner trimming when you are trying to keep lines straight. The blade is rated to cut branches up to 3/4 inch in diameter, so it is not just for soft new growth. It has enough bite for established shrubs and regular property maintenance.

The design is aimed at making a long tool feel manageable. Overall length is 38 inches, which gives you useful reach without turning the trimmer into a clumsy, nose-heavy unit. Net weight is 4.55 pounds without a battery and 5.95 pounds with a battery, which helps explain Makita's claim that it weighs up to 40% less than comparable gas models. Less weight matters when you are trimming for more than a few minutes at a time, especially on side walls, tops of hedges, and awkward angles.

Makita also built in details that matter over a full day of use. The anti-vibration design helps reduce fatigue, and the rubberized soft grip gives you better control when the blade is moving through dense growth. A front handle and switch lever layout gives you a secure two-hand grip, which is what you want when working around corners, shaping rounded shrubs, or making repeated horizontal cuts.

For outdoor equipment, durability is a real buying factor, and this model is built with Makita Extreme Protection Technology for improved dust and water resistance. That matters when you are trimming in morning dew, working around irrigation, or dealing with dusty property edges. Makita also includes Star Protection Computer Controls, which lets the tool and battery communicate to help protect against overloading, over-discharging, and overheating. That is not fluff. It helps protect both runtime and battery life when the tool is pushed in heavier material.

Runtime is solid for routine maintenance work. With a Makita 18V LXT 4.0Ah battery, the XHU09Z can run up to 45 minutes, which is enough for a lot of cleanup on standard residential properties. This is a tool-only package, so the battery and charger are sold separately. If you already own Makita 18V LXT batteries and chargers, that is a plus. If you do not, factor that into the buy.

This hedge trimmer is a strong fit for landscapers, property maintenance crews, and homeowners who want a lighter alternative to gas without giving up useful cutting speed. It is especially good for buyers who want low noise, low maintenance, and quick grab-and-go operation. If your work is mostly hedge shaping, shrub maintenance, and routine trimming rather than clearing thick brush all day, this is exactly the kind of cordless outdoor power tool that saves time and aggravation.

Pro Tip

If you are doing long runs of hedge shaping, pair this trimmer with a 4.0Ah 18V LXT battery like Makita references for its runtime claim. It keeps the tool balanced better than jumping straight to the biggest pack, which matters on a trimmer you are holding out in front of you.
