Serious Metal Capacity The 4-3/4 inch cutting capacity lets this portable band saw handle conduit, pipe, channel, all thread, square tubing, and other common jobsite metal without dragging out a larger saw. Dial In the Cut A 6-setting variable speed range of 275 to 530 feet per minute helps match blade speed to the material, which means cleaner cuts and better control across different metal stock. Built for Carry Work At 20-5/8 inches long with an ergonomic soft-grip handle, the Makita portable band saw is easier to manage when you are cutting overhead, working in mechanical rooms, or moving from cut to cut.

Overview

The Makita XBP02Z 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless Portable Band Saw is a cordless portable band saw built for metal cutting on the jobsite. This is a portable band saw designed for cutting metal pipe, conduit, strut, channel, threaded rod, sheet metal, and square tubing. Model Number XBP02Z. It is a bare tool, so it is meant for users already on the Makita 18V LXT platform or anyone adding a dedicated metal-cutting saw to their cordless setup.

What matters here is the balance between capacity and mobility. The saw delivers a variable speed range of 275 to 530 feet per minute through a Makita-built high torque motor, with a 6-setting speed dial that lets you slow down or speed up depending on the material. That is useful when you move between thinner stock and heavier metal because you are not stuck with one cut speed for every job. The 4-3/4 inch round and 4-3/4 inch by 4-3/4 inch rectangular cutting capacity gives it the reach for a wide range of service, installation, and fabrication work.

Makita built this saw to stay manageable in the hand instead of feeling like a stripped-down shop tool. The compact body measures 20-5/8 inches long, and the ergonomic shape with rubberized soft grip is there to reduce fatigue during repeated cuts. An adjustable stopper plate helps support the material and protect the work surface, which is a simple feature but one that makes a real difference when you need straighter, more controlled cuts on pipe, strut, or tubing. Rubber bumpers add protection when the saw gets set down on concrete or banged around in a truck.

For jobsite practicality, the XBP02Z includes a built-in LED light to brighten the cut area and a removable tool hook for hanging the saw between cuts. There is also a protection circuit with an alert light that provides an over-torque motor protection warning, which helps protect the tool under heavier load. The trigger uses a lock-off design that requires two actions to power on the saw, adding a layer of control when you are carrying or repositioning it.

On the battery side, this saw runs on Makita 18V LXT Lithium-Ion batteries and is equipped with Star Protection Computer Controls. That system allows the tool and battery to communicate in real time to help protect against overload, over-discharge, and overheating. It is also compatible with Makita 18V LXT and 18V compact Lithium-Ion batteries that have the star symbol. Battery and charger are sold separately, so this makes the most sense for users who already own Makita LXT batteries and want to add a dedicated cordless metal-cutting saw without buying into another platform.

The blade capacity is equally job-focused. The saw accepts a 44-7/8 inch blade, and the stated cutting applications cover Unistrut, all thread, channel, corrugated material, conduit, pipe, sheet metal, and square tubing. Externally accessible brushes improve serviceability, and on-board wrench storage makes stopper plate adjustment quicker when you need to make a setup change on the fly.

Who is this for? Electricians, plumbers, HVAC techs, metal building crews, installers, maintenance teams, and general contractors will get the most out of it. If your day involves carrying tools through finished spaces, up ladders, across rooftops, or into crowded utility areas, a cordless band saw like this saves time and keeps sparks to a minimum compared to cutoff solutions. If you already run Makita 18V LXT, the Makita XBP02Z 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless Portable Band Saw is an easy add for cleaner, faster metal cutting without a cord.

Cut Metal Cleanly Without Dragging a Cord

This saw is built for the kind of metal cutting work where mobility matters just as much as capacity. It gives you cordless freedom for service calls, overhead work, and fast cuts in places where cords get in the way.

• Variable speed range of 275 to 530 ft./min. for matching cut speed to the material
• 4-3/4 inch cutting capacity handles common pipe, conduit, strut, and tubing sizes

Built to Stay Manageable Through Repetitive Cuts

Portable band saws only earn their keep if they are comfortable enough to carry and steady enough to cut accurately. Makita kept the body compact, added a soft-grip handle, and included an adjustable stopper plate so the saw feels more controlled in real work conditions.

• 20-5/8 inch overall length for easier handling in tight mechanical spaces
• Built-in LED light, rubber bumpers, and removable hook add jobsite convenience
