Key Features

Brushless Runtime The electronically controlled brushless motor uses battery power more efficiently, which helps this grinder run longer per charge and stay cooler under steady work. Smarter Under Load Automatic Speed Change adjusts speed and torque while you grind or cut, so the tool keeps working when material conditions change instead of bogging down. Compact Angle Grinder At 14-1/4 inches long and 5.6 lbs. with battery, the Makita XAG04Z angle grinder is easier to control in tight spots and less tiring for overhead or extended work.

Overview

The Makita XAG04Z 18V LXT Brushless Cordless 4-1/2 in. / 5 in. Cut-Off/Angle Grinder is a cordless angle grinder built for grinding, cutting, and sanding across metal, masonry, tile, pipe, and conduit. This is a cordless cut-off/angle grinder designed for material removal and cutting where corded-style performance matters but cord drag does not. Model Number: XAG04Z. It is sold as a tool only, so it is a good fit for users already running Makita 18V LXT batteries and chargers.

The big draw here is how Makita balances power with runtime. The brushless motor is electronically controlled to match torque and speed to the job, which helps the tool use battery energy more efficiently. Makita also builds in Automatic Speed Change technology, which adjusts output during operation as load changes. In practical terms, that means the grinder stays more consistent when you lean into tougher material instead of feeling flat or underpowered.

For real jobsite use, the XAG04Z is set up with the features that matter. It runs at a no-load speed of 8,500 RPM, uses a standard 5/8 in. - 11 UNC spindle, and accepts 4-1/2 in. and 5 in. wheels. That combination makes it useful for a wide range of cutting and grinding tasks without locking you into a hard-to-find accessory format. If you already keep common grinder wheels on the truck, this one fits right into the lineup.

Makita also put some real thought into control and safety. Active Feedback-sensing Technology shuts the motor off if the wheel rotation is suddenly forced to stop, which helps reduce the chance of a violent bind-up event. Soft start cuts down the startup snap, and anti-restart protection helps prevent the tool from powering back on when a battery is inserted with the switch locked on. Those are not throwaway features on a grinder. They matter when you are working awkward angles, ladders, overhead runs, or fast-paced cut lists.

The overall design is compact and job-friendly. At only 14-1/4 inches long, this grinder is easier to maneuver in tighter work areas than bulkier cordless models. The slide switch with lock-on is a familiar setup for longer grinding passes, and the rubberized soft grip helps with comfort and control. Makita also uses spiral bevel gears for smoother power transfer, internal cooling for better performance, and wire mesh intake covers to help keep debris out of the motor.

This tool is part of the Makita 18V LXT platform and is compatible with Makita 18V Lithium-Ion slide-style batteries that have the Star symbol. Star Protection Computer Controls let the tool and battery communicate in real time to help protect against overloading, over-discharging, and overheating. That system integration is a real advantage if you already own LXT tools because you are not just buying a grinder, you are adding another working piece to a battery platform that is already deep.

The Makita XAG04Z 18V LXT Brushless Cordless 4-1/2 in. / 5 in. Cut-Off/Angle Grinder makes the most sense for contractors, maintenance crews, metal fabricators, remodelers, electricians, and serious DIY users who need a cordless grinder that is light, compact, and proven. If you want a bare tool that covers general grinding, cut-off work, and surface prep without a lot of extra bulk, this is the kind of grinder that earns its keep fast.
