Overview

The Makita 40V max XGT Cordless Lantern with Radio, Tool Only is a battery-powered jobsite lantern and radio built for portable lighting, mobile audio, and general worksite convenience. This is a cordless lantern with radio designed for jobsite lighting and audio. Model Number: GRM04. If you already run Makita XGT batteries and want one tool that can light up a space, play radio or Bluetooth audio, and charge small devices through USB, this one makes a lot of sense.

The big selling point is how much utility Makita packs into one compact unit. The lantern delivers up to 310 lumens in a 360-degree pattern, which matters when you need broad area light instead of a narrow beam. Makita also adds a high-luminance flashlight mode that provides up to 200 lumens, so you are not limited to just area lighting. It offers four LED modes: 360-degree lantern, 3-side lantern, flashlight, and strobe flashlight. That gives you more control depending on whether you are lighting a small service area, a work table, or a larger section of the site.

On the audio side, the GRM04 has a push-button digital tuner with 9 programmable FM stations and built-in Bluetooth so you can connect a mobile device wirelessly. That is useful for crews who want quick access to music, talk radio, or jobsite updates without dragging a separate speaker around. Makita also built the lens guard to double as an FM antenna, which is a smart way to add function without making the tool bulkier than it needs to be.

Makita clearly designed this lantern for real-world handling, not just shelf appeal. It has a foldable metal hang hook/handle with a rubber grip for carrying or hanging, plus a strap with hook that lets the lantern hang upside down for different lighting angles. That matters more than it sounds like on the job. If you are under a sink, above a panel, inside a mechanical room, or working in a half-finished space, the ability to hang the light where you need it can save time and reduce shadows.

For runtime, Makita lists the GRM04 with strong endurance depending on how you use it. The radio runs up to 28 hours, the lantern runs up to 16 hours, and running both together delivers up to 10 hours with a 40V max XGT 2.5Ah battery. That is the kind of runtime that works for long shifts, service calls, backup lighting, or keeping a work area usable after normal daylight is gone. There is also a built-in USB port for charging portable electronics, which is a practical add-on when your phone, earbuds, or small device starts dying in the middle of the day.

Durability is another reason this product stands out. Makita includes Extreme Protection Technology (XPT) for improved dust and water resistance in harsh conditions. This is not the kind of feature you brag about until you need it, but on construction sites, remodels, outdoor work, and service jobs, better resistance to dust and moisture is exactly the difference between a tool that keeps working and one that becomes a headache.

The system fit is straightforward. This is a tool-only XGT product, so the battery and charger are sold separately. It is built for the Makita 40V max XGT lithium-ion platform, and Makita specifies using genuine Makita batteries and chargers. If you are already on XGT, the GRM04 is easy to add because it gives you more value from the same battery system without adding another charger platform to the truck or shop.

Who should buy it? This one is a strong fit for contractors, remodelers, electricians, plumbers, HVAC techs, maintenance crews, and serious DIY users who need portable area light with extra utility. It is also a good pickup for anyone building out an XGT kit who wants a jobsite lighting solution that does more than just throw light. If all you need is a bare-bones flashlight, this is more tool than necessary. But if you want lighting, radio, Bluetooth audio, USB charging, and flexible hanging options in one compact cordless unit, the GRM04 earns its spot.
