Key Features

10.5 Amp Power The 10.5 amp motor spins at 11,000 RPM, so this angle grinder has the speed needed for steel grinding, cut-off work, rust removal, and masonry cutting without feeling underpowered. SJS Gear Protection Makita's Super Joint System is a mechanical clutch that lets the drive shaft slip if the wheel binds. That helps protect the motor and gears, which matters when you're pushing hard in demanding grinding and cutting work. Fast Stop, Better Control The electric brake cuts spin-down time so you can set the tool down sooner and move to the next task faster. That saves time on repetitive work and adds a little more control between cuts.

Overview

The Makita GA5020 5" SJS Angle Grinder is a corded 5-inch grinder built for metalworking, cutting, grinding, and surface cleanup. This is a corded angle grinder designed for grinding, cut-off work, rust removal, and masonry cutting. Model Number GA5020. If you want a shop or jobsite grinder with real power, a brake, and better protection when a wheel catches, this is the kind of tool that makes sense.

The big selling point is the combination of a 10.5 amp motor and 11,000 RPM no-load speed. In plain terms, that means it has the output for demanding work on ferrous metal, general steel grinding, paint and rust removal, and cut-off tasks where a weaker grinder starts to bog down. Makita also adds an electric brake, which shortens the wait after you release the trigger. On jobs where you're making repeated cuts or moving between fasteners, weld prep, and cleanup, that quicker stop is more useful than it sounds on paper.

What really separates this grinder from a basic model is Makita's SJS, or Super Joint System. This is a mechanical clutch system that allows the drive shaft to slip if the wheel is forced to a stop. That matters because bind-ups are hard on grinders. Instead of dumping all that stress into the gears and motor, the system helps protect the drive components. For anyone doing heavier grinding or cutting where the wheel can catch, that is a practical durability feature, not just brochure talk.

Makita also built the GA5020 for real-world use instead of just raw numbers. It weighs 5.9 lbs, so it stays manageable for longer sessions. The rear trigger switch layout gives you a secure grip, and the rubberized rear handle helps with comfort when you're grinding overhead, working on vertical surfaces, or moving around equipment and steel. The side handle mounts on either side of the tool, which is a simple but important detail for control and positioning.

Dust and debris are where grinders usually take a beating, so Makita addressed that directly. Labyrinth construction helps keep contamination out of the motor, bearings, and gears, and the zig-zag varnish on the armature adds another layer of protection against dust and debris. If you work around grinding dust, masonry dust, or general shop contamination, those features help the tool last longer and stay more reliable between service intervals. Externally accessible brushes also make maintenance easier when the time comes.

The Makita GA5020 5" SJS Angle Grinder uses a 5-inch wheel and a 5/8 in. - 11 UNC spindle, which is a common setup for this class of grinder. It also has a tool-less wheel guard for faster guard adjustments and an AC/DC switch for use with an alternative power source. It is corded, running on 120 volts, so it is a good fit for users who prefer steady output and unlimited runtime over battery management.

This grinder is a strong match for welders, fabricators, masons, plumbers, electricians, HVAC techs, automotive technicians, stone and tile workers, and general contractors who need one corded grinder that can handle a wide spread of tasks. It also makes sense for serious DIY users who want a more durable angle grinder instead of a light-duty homeowner model. If your work includes steel grinding, brick cutting, restoration, or repair work where wheel bind-up is a real concern, this model earns its keep.
