Overview

The Makita DML817 Compact 18V LXT 300-Lumen LED Flashlight is a cordless jobsite light built for contractors, service techs, and homeowners who already run Makita 18V LXT batteries and want a compact light that does more than just sit in a drawer. This is a flashlight designed for cordless jobsite lighting, tight-space visibility, and USB device charging. Model Number: DML817. It is sold as a flashlight only, so battery and charger are not included.

What makes this light useful is not just the lumen number. The DML817 gives you three operating modes, with up to 300 lumens when the top and side lights are used together, or 150 lumens from either the top light or the side light alone. That gives you better control over how you use it. Need broad task lighting inside a panel, cabinet, attic, or crawlspace? Run both lights. Need less glare or want to stretch battery life? Use a single light mode instead.

Runtime is where this Makita flashlight starts to separate itself from disposable lights and smaller rechargeable units. Makita rates it for up to 29 hours of illumination with an 18V LXT 6.0Ah battery, and the published max runtime spec lists 49 hours. Either way, the point is simple: this is a light you can leave on for extended work without constantly babysitting charge levels. For anyone doing inspections, punch-list work, power outages, or low-light service calls, that kind of runtime is a real advantage.

The design is also smarter than it looks. The body is low-profile, ergonomic, and under 4 inches long, so it is easy to stash in a tool bag or glove box without wasting space. Makita built it so the flashlight can sit atop an 18V LXT battery for added stability and easier placement on the job. That is a practical feature when you need hands-free area lighting on a floor, shelf, countertop, or mechanical room surface and do not want the light rolling around.

On the build side, the DML817 keeps weight down to just 0.4 lbs without a battery, or about 1.9 lbs with a BL1860B 6.0Ah battery installed. The compact housing, neutral white LED output, and rubberized soft grip shown in the product imagery all point to a light meant to be carried, moved, and used repeatedly during the day. It is not oversized, and it is not trying to be a giant flood light. It is meant to be the light you actually keep with you because it takes up so little room.

There is also added value in the built-in USB charging function. If you are already carrying LXT batteries, the DML817 can help keep compatible USB devices topped off when needed. That makes it useful beyond lighting alone, especially in service vehicles, emergency kits, campsites, and jobsites where a quick phone or accessory charge matters more than carrying another dedicated power bank.

Compatibility is straightforward. This flashlight is part of the Makita 18V LXT system and works with Makita 18V LXT slide-style lithium-ion batteries sold separately. If you are already on LXT, this is an easy add-on. If you are not, it makes the most sense for buyers who want a compact utility light and already own Makita batteries and a charger. Bare-tool lights like this are usually best when they plug into a platform you already use.

Who should buy it? Electricians, HVAC techs, plumbers, maintenance crews, remodelers, and homeowners who want one compact light that can handle close-up work and general area lighting without eating up space. If you need maximum output for lighting up a whole site, you should be looking at a larger work light. If you want a compact, stable, long-running cordless flashlight with USB charging, the DML817 is the kind of light that earns a permanent place in the truck.

Compact Light for Tight Spaces

This is the kind of flashlight that fits where larger site lights do not. The low-profile body is built for cabinets, service compartments, utility rooms, and anywhere a bulky light becomes one more thing in the way.

• Overall length is listed at 4-1/4 in., with a low-profile design under 4 in. called out by Makita
• Neutral white LED light is better suited to seeing detail than harsh blue-tinted light
• Lightweight body helps reduce fatigue when you are carrying it around all day
