Overview

The Makita BL4040 40V max XGT 4.0Ah Battery is a lithium-ion battery pack built for Makita's XGT cordless platform. This is a battery pack designed for powering 40V max XGT cordless tools in heavy-load jobsite applications. If you are running XGT saws, blowers, grinders, rotary hammers, or other high-demand cordless tools, this pack is made to deliver solid runtime without dragging charge times out all day. Model Number: BL4040.

What matters here is the balance. A 4.0Ah pack gives you meaningful runtime while staying more manageable than larger high-capacity batteries. Makita rates this battery for a full charge in 45 minutes or less with a compatible charger sold separately, so it is set up for rotation on active jobs where downtime costs you. The built-in 4-LED fuel gauge also makes it easy to check charge level before you climb a ladder, head to the roof, or start the next cut.

Makita built the BL4040 around jobsite durability, not just capacity. The outer case is impact-resistant, and the inner liner is designed to absorb shock. That matters if your tools ride in the truck, get set down on concrete, or work in rough conditions where battery packs take more abuse than most people admit. Makita also uses rigid rails with impact-resistant construction so the battery stays secured to the tool during high-demand applications.

This battery is also part of the XGT system's digital communication setup. According to Makita, the battery communicates with compatible XGT tools and chargers to optimize performance and provide up to 2X longer sustained power under heavy-load applications. In plain terms, it is not just storing power. It is part of the system that helps the tool manage output, heat, and battery health when the work gets demanding.

On the protection side, the BL4040 actively monitors against overload, over-discharge, and overheating. That is important for anyone leaning on cordless tools for real production work, because hard use, long trigger time, and hot environments are exactly where cheap or poorly managed packs start to give up. Makita's enhanced cooling design is there to support battery life and keep charging efficient.

Compatibility is straightforward: this is a 40V max XGT battery for Makita XGT tools and chargers. It is not a general-purpose battery and it is not meant for other Makita platforms. If you are already on XGT, this is a core power source. If you are not, this battery only makes sense if you are buying into that platform on purpose.

Who should buy it? Contractors and serious DIY users who want a genuine Makita XGT battery with fast recharge, onboard fuel gauge, and the protection features needed for repeated daily use. If your work calls for dependable cordless power and you want a battery sized for a good mix of runtime, weight, and recharge speed, this one lands in a very practical sweet spot.

Know Your Charge Before You Start

A battery gauge sounds simple until you are halfway through a task and realize you guessed wrong. The onboard LED charge indicator gives you a quick read before you grab the tool and go.

• 4 bright green LED indicators show battery charge level clearly
• Helps plan battery swaps and reduce interruptions during fastening, cutting, and cleanup work

Built to Handle Hard Use

This pack is made for real jobsite handling, not shelf life. Makita calls out an impact-resistant outer case, a shock-absorbing inner liner, and rigid rails that help the battery stay secure on the tool.

• Impact-resistant case and shock-absorbing inner liner support durability
• Rigid battery rails are designed to keep the pack locked in during high-demand use
