Overview

The Makita 9557PB 4-1/2 in. Paddle Switch Angle Grinder is a corded angle grinder built for grinding, metal cutting, surface prep, and polishing. This is a corded angle grinder designed for grinding, cutting, and polishing applications. Model Number: 9557PB. If you want a straightforward grinder with solid power, a paddle switch, and the kind of durability features that matter in daily use, this one is aimed at tradesmen, shop users, and serious DIYers who need dependable performance without stepping up to a larger, heavier grinder.

The 7.5 amp motor delivers a no-load speed of 11,000 RPM, which puts this tool right where a 4-1/2 in. grinder needs to be for fast stock removal and clean work with the right wheel or accessory. In practical terms, that means it can handle weld cleanup, rust removal, edge grinding, and cutoff wheel work without bogging down in normal use. Because it runs at a fixed speed and does not use a variable speed dial, it is best suited for users who want a dedicated high-speed grinder rather than a multi-speed finishing tool.

Makita kept this model compact, and that is one of the big reasons people still buy tools like this. The body has a small 2-1/2 in. diameter barrel grip, and the grinder weighs just 4.5 lbs. That combination makes a difference when you are controlling the tool one-handed for short tasks or repositioning it repeatedly throughout the day. The side handle mounts on either side, so left- and right-handed users can set it up the way they work. There is also a rotatable gear housing with 90 degree positioning, which helps when you need a better switch or guard orientation for the task at hand.

Durability is where Makita gave this grinder some real jobsite value. Labyrinth construction helps seal and protect the drive gear and bearings from contamination, and the protective zig-zig varnish helps shield the armature from dust and debris. That matters because grinders live in a rough environment. Fine metal dust, masonry dust, and general shop debris are what shorten tool life. Features like these are not flashy, but they are exactly the kind of thing that keeps a grinder running longer when it gets used the way grinders usually do.

For everyday handling, the extra large paddle switch gives you a comfortable grip and quick control during starts and stops. The lock-on and lock-off functions are useful when you are making longer passes and want less hand strain, while the push-button spindle lock makes wheel changes easier. The all-ball bearing design and metal gear housing also back up the tool's industrial focus. These are the kinds of build details that help a grinder stay tight and smooth instead of feeling loose after hard use.

The Makita 9557PB 4-1/2 in. Paddle Switch Angle Grinder is corded, so you are not tied to a battery platform, and it also includes an AC/DC switch for use with alternative power sources. The spindle is 5/8 in. - 11 UNC, which is the standard interface many users expect for common 4-1/2 in. grinder accessories. That makes it easy to source grinding wheels, cutoff wheels, and other compatible attachments without chasing oddball fitment.

This grinder makes the most sense for metalworkers, welders, fabricators, maintenance crews, contractors, and home shop users who need a compact general-purpose corded grinder. It is also a good fit for homeowners who want one reliable grinder for occasional cutting and grinding without stepping into cheap throwaway territory. If your work calls for one solid 4-1/2 in. angle grinder that is light in the hand, fast on material, and built to deal with dust, this model checks the right boxes.
