Key Features

Split-Point Precision A 118-degree split-point tip bites in immediately instead of skating across the surface, so the hole starts exactly where you marked it instead of a few thousandths off. High-Speed Steel Durability High-speed steel construction holds an edge through repeated dowel holes without dulling the way a cheaper carbon-steel bit would after a handful of joints. Built-In Stop Collar The stop collar included with this bit sets a repeatable drilling depth, so every hole in a multi-dowel joint comes out the same depth without measuring and marking each one by hand.

Overview

The Kreg 1/4-in. Dowel Drill Bit with Stop Collar is the drill bit half of Kreg's dowel joinery system, sized to match Kreg's 1/4 in. fluted dowel pins for edge-to-edge and mitered joinery. Model number KDDB250. This is a purpose-built joinery bit, not a general-purpose wood bit it's designed to produce the exact hole diameter and depth that Kreg's dowel jigs and dowel pins are engineered around.

The 118-degree split-point tip is the detail that separates a dedicated dowel bit from a standard twist bit for this application. A split-point geometry bites into the wood immediately on contact instead of wandering or skating across the surface before it starts cutting, which matters enormously in dowel joinery where hole placement accuracy directly determines whether the joint lines up. A hole that starts even slightly off-mark throws off alignment on every dowel in a multi-pin joint.

High-speed steel construction is what lets this bit hold that precision through repeated use. Dowel joinery projects cabinet face frames, shelving, furniture assembly often call for drilling many holes of the identical size in a single project, and a bit that dulls quickly will drift in both accuracy and hole diameter as it wears. HSS keeps the cutting edge sharp through more holes before resharpening or replacement is needed.

The stop collar included with this bit is what makes consistent hole depth practical across a whole project. Set it once against a test piece matching your dowel length, lock it down, and every subsequent hole comes out to the same depth without re-measuring which is exactly what you need when a joint depends on multiple dowels all seating the same amount.

Who should buy this: woodworkers, cabinet installers, and furniture builders using Kreg's dowel joinery system with 1/4 in. dowel pins. This bit is sized specifically for that system if you're working with a different dowel diameter, Kreg's 3/8 in. and 1/2 in. dowel drill bits are the matching sizes for those pins.

Starts Exactly Where You Mark It

A split-point tip is the difference between a hole that starts on your mark and one that wanders before it bites critical when a joint's alignment depends on it.

• 118-degree split-point tip for accurate starts
• Sized to match Kreg's 1/4 in. fluted dowel pins

Set the Depth Once, Drill the Whole Project

The included stop collar locks in a repeatable drilling depth, so a multi-dowel joint doesn't depend on measuring every single hole by hand.

• Stop collar sets consistent hole depth across a project
• Works with Kreg's Dowel Jig Kit and dowel jig upgrade kits

What's in the Box

Pro Tip

Drill a test hole in scrap and dry-fit a dowel before committing to your workpiece it takes thirty seconds and confirms your stop collar depth is actually set to the dowel length you're using.

Tool Nut's Take

Tool Nut's Take

The half of the dowel system that determines whether it works

The dowel pins get the attention, but this bit and its stop collar are what actually determine whether your holes line up.

• Who it's for: Anyone running 1/4 in. dowel joinery with Kreg's dowel pins and dowel jigs.
• Why it stands out: Split-point accuracy, HSS durability, and a stop collar that takes the guesswork out of matching depth across multiple holes.
• Worth knowing: This bit is sized specifically for 1/4 in. dowels make sure it matches the dowel pins you're actually using before you drill.

Common Questions

• Does this include the stop collar shown in the title? Yes, the stop collar and its hardware are included with the bit.
• What dowel size does this match? Kreg's 1/4 in. fluted dowel pins.
• Can I use this without a dowel jig? It's designed to work with Kreg's dowel jig system for aligned joinery, though the bit itself will drill a standard 1/4 in. hole on its own.
