Overview

The Knipex 88 02 250 Alligator Water Pump Pliers is a 10 inch adjustable gripping tool for pipe, nuts, fittings, and general service work. Model Number 88 02 250. This is a pair of water pump pliers designed for gripping and turning pipes, nuts, and fittings. It is built for tradespeople and serious DIY users who need a strong, reliable set of pliers that locks onto the work instead of fighting them every step of the way.

Where this tool earns its keep is the combination of jaw capacity and control. Knipex gives this pliers 9 adjustment positions, which increases usable gripping range without making the tool bulky. It handles up to 2 inches on round pipe and up to 1 13/16 inches on hex stock, so it covers a wide range of plumbing, mechanical, and maintenance jobs with one tool. The self-locking action on pipes and nuts helps keep the jaws engaged with lower hand force, which matters when you are breaking loose fittings or working overhead and one-handed.

The jaw design is another big part of why these stand out. The gripping surfaces use special hardened teeth at approximately 61 HRC, which gives you dependable bite with low wear over time. In plain terms, the teeth stay effective longer and are less likely to skate across rounded material. That is exactly what you want in a water pump pliers: secure grip, less slipping, and fewer chewed-up fasteners.

Knipex also got the structure right. The box-joint design uses a double guide for better stability than lighter-duty slip-joint styles, so the tool tracks more solidly under load. The body is made from chrome vanadium electric steel and is forged, then multi-stage oil-hardened. That construction gives the tool the kind of toughness you want for daily use around plumbing rough-ins, mechanical rooms, utility work, and general repair.

On the handling side, the slim head and joint area improve access in cramped spaces, and the slim multi-component handles make the tool easier to hang onto without feeling oversized in the pouch. Knipex also includes a pinch guard to help keep fingers out of the danger zone during adjustment and use. At about 0.825 lbs, it has enough substance to feel like a serious tool without being a brick on your belt.

This Knipex Alligator is a strong fit for plumbers, maintenance techs, HVAC installers, mechanics, and general contractors who regularly work with pipe, locknuts, valves, and hardware that does not forgive weak grip. If you want a water pump pliers that prioritizes bite, durability, and access over gimmicks, this is the kind of tool that tends to stay in rotation for a long time.

Locks On With Less Hand Force

The self-locking jaw action is the feature most users notice right away. Once the pliers bite into pipe or a nut, you spend less energy hanging on and more energy turning the work.

• Self-locking on pipes and nuts helps prevent slipping off the workpiece
• Lower required hand force makes repetitive service work easier on your grip

Adjusts for More Real-World Range

The 9-position adjustment gives this pliers a wider working range without making the tool clumsy. That means one pair can cover more tasks around pipe, fittings, hex stock, and general hardware.

• 9 adjustment positions deliver about 30% more gripping capacity
• Handles up to 2 in round pipe and 1 13/16 in hex material

Built for Daily Carry and Hard Use

This is not a throw-in-the-drawer utility pliers. The forged construction, stable box-joint, and hardened teeth are the details that keep it working when cheaper pliers start twisting, slipping, or wearing smooth.

• Chrome vanadium electric steel, forged and multi-stage oil-hardened
• Box-joint design with double guide improves stability under load
