Overview

The Knipex 87 51 250 Cobra ES Water Pump Pliers are a 10 inch extra-slim adjustable pliers tool built for gripping pipes, nuts, bolts, and other fittings in tight spaces. This is a water pump pliers tool designed for service work, maintenance, repair, and general gripping jobs where access is the real problem. Model Number: 87 51 250. If you already like the standard Cobra layout but need more reach into narrow spaces, this is the one to look at.

What sets this Cobra ES apart is the jaw shape. Knipex gives it longer, narrower jaws than the standard Cobra, along with a slim head and joint area. In real use, that means better access between hoses, behind brackets, around engine components, and inside cramped assemblies where bulkier pliers hit surrounding parts before the jaws ever get where you need them. The front gripping serration also helps on round parts like screws, bolts, and wire rope, and the groove near the tip is useful for holding nails, pins, and small bolts that are awkward to grab with regular pliers.

The adjustment system is the familiar Knipex push-button setup, and it is one of the reasons Cobra pliers have such a solid reputation on the job. You can adjust directly on the workpiece, and the 25 fine adjustment positions make it easier to dial in the grip size without the tool feeling sloppy or oversized in your hand. For anyone doing repetitive fastening or loosening work on mixed sizes, that saves time and makes the tool more comfortable to use through a long day.

The jaw geometry matters too. Knipex designed these pliers to self-lock on pipes and nuts, which reduces the tendency to slip off when you lean into the handle. That means less wasted effort and lower hand force compared to tools that need constant squeezing just to stay engaged. The three-point contact on flat material helps the tool stay planted, which is especially useful when you are dealing with worn hardware or need better control on stubborn fittings.

From a build standpoint, these are made from forged, oil-hardened chrome vanadium electric steel and use a box-joint design for stability. That construction is a big part of why Knipex pliers tend to stay tight and dependable over time. The polished jaws and grey atramentized finish give you a practical working surface, while the non-slip plastic handles provide a secure hold without adding unnecessary bulk. Knipex also includes a pinch guard, which is a small detail until you use the tool enough to appreciate it.

Capacity is strong for the slim format. These pliers handle up to 1-1/2 inch round pipe and up to 1-3/8 inch hex stock, so they are not just a specialty access tool. They still cover a wide range of everyday service and repair work. At roughly 0.72 lb, they are easy to carry in a pouch or service bag without feeling like dead weight.

The Knipex 87 51 250 Cobra ES Water Pump Pliers make the most sense for mechanics, maintenance techs, plumbers, installers, equipment repair crews, and serious DIY users who regularly work in confined spaces. If your usual pliers are too bulky to get clean access, these solve a real problem. If you mainly work out in the open on larger pipe, a standard Cobra may be enough. But when access is tight and grip still needs to be strong, the ES version earns its place fast.

Reach Into Tight Spots

The whole point of the Cobra ES is access. The extra-slim head and long jaw profile let you get onto hardware that sits behind obstructions or between closely packed parts.

• Long, narrow jaws improve reach where standard tongue-and-groove pliers can be too bulky
• Slim head and joint construction help in service, maintenance, automotive, and equipment repair work

Hold on With Less Effort

Once adjusted, the self-locking jaw design helps the pliers bite into pipe and nut surfaces instead of skating around. That gives you better control and lowers the amount of squeeze force needed from your hand.

• Self-locking on pipes and nuts to reduce slipping
• Three-point contact helps the tool stay planted on flat material

Dial In the Fit

Fine adjustment matters on a tool like this. You want the jaws sized close to the work so the grip feels solid, not vague. Knipex gives you enough adjustment range to make that easy across a wide mix of fittings and materials.

• 25 adjustment positions for better sizing directly on the workpiece
• Front serration and tip groove improve control on round parts, pins, and small hardware

Pro Tip

When you are working on a stubborn fitting in a crowded space, adjust the jaws one click tighter than you think you need before loading the handle. The Cobra ES holds best when the jaw size is close to the workpiece, and that is where the fine adjustment really pays off.
