Key Features

Push-Button Fit The adjustment button lets you size the jaws right on the workpiece. That makes the Knipex 87 03 125 Cobra Water Pump Pliers quicker to set and easier to hold comfortably on small fittings, nuts, and pipe. Locks In Hard Self-locking jaws bite onto pipes and nuts so the pliers stay put instead of skating off the part. You use less hand force, which matters when you are working one-handed or in tight spots. Small Size, Real Bite At 5 inches long, this compact tongue-and-groove pliers design still opens to 1-1/16 inches. That makes it a useful grab-and-go option for service calls, tool pouches, and small mechanical work.

Overview

The Knipex 87 03 125 Cobra Water Pump Pliers is a compact 5 inch adjustable pliers tool built for gripping pipes, nuts, and small hardware where a full-size pair is overkill. This is a tongue-and-groove pliers designed for gripping and turning small round and hex workpieces. Model Number 87 03 125. If you do service work, assembly, maintenance, or keep a tight hand-tool kit, this size makes a lot of sense because it gives you real holding power without taking up pocket or pouch space.

What makes this pliers stand out is how quickly it adapts to the job. The push-button adjustment lets you set the jaw opening directly on the workpiece, and the fine adjustment gives you 13 positions to dial in the fit. In practical terms, that means less fiddling and less guesswork when you move from one fastener or fitting size to the next. The maximum jaw opening is 1-1/16 inches for round pipe, hex stock, and general working capacity, which is impressive for a tool this short.

Knipex also built the Cobra around grip security, not just convenience. The self-locking jaw action on pipes and nuts helps keep the tool from slipping off under load, so you do not have to death-grip the handles to keep control. The gripping surfaces use specially hardened teeth rated at about 61 HRC, which matters because sharp, hard teeth wear slower and hold better on stubborn material. When you are trying to break loose a small fitting or hold a part steady, that dependable bite is the difference between clean control and rounded hardware.

Structurally, this pair uses a box-joint design with double guide for added stability. That gives the joint a more solid feel and helps the jaws track better under pressure. Knipex also calls out reliable catching of the hinge bolt to prevent unintentional shifting, plus a pinch guard to reduce the chance of catching your fingers during adjustment and use. Those are small details until you use cheap pliers that shift or pinch, then you realize why this design has such a loyal following.

The tool is made from chrome vanadium electric steel, forged and multi-stage oil-hardened, with a chrome-plated finish and non-slip plastic-coated red handles. That combination gives you a durable working surface with corrosion resistance and a grip that stays simple and compact. At about 0.195 pounds, it is light enough to disappear into a kit, but it still feels like a real shop tool, not a novelty mini pliers.

The Knipex 87 03 125 Cobra Water Pump Pliers is a smart fit for electricians, plumbers, HVAC techs, mechanics, maintenance crews, and serious DIY users who work around small fittings and hardware. It is especially useful when you need a compact adjustable pliers for service panels, under-sink work, appliance repair, bike and motorcycle tasks, or keeping in a compact everyday carry tool roll. If you want maximum reach or heavy leverage on large pipe, go up in size. If you want a small pair that actually works like a pro tool, this one earns its spot.

Pro Tip

Set the jaws so they just slip over the pipe or nut before you squeeze. On the Cobra design, that gives the self-locking teeth the best chance to bite cleanly, so you get more hold with less hand effort.
