Push-Button Adjustment Set the jaw directly on the workpiece with the push-button joint. It speeds up fitment, helps you dial in the grip faster, and keeps the handle opening more comfortable in your hand. Self-Locking Bite The jaw geometry locks onto pipe and nuts instead of skating across them. That means less hand force wasted squeezing the handle and more control when you need to turn stubborn fittings. Compact Cobra Pliers The Knipex 87 02 180 Cobra Water Pump Pliers give you up to 1-1/2 inch pipe capacity in a compact 7-1/4 inch body. That is the sweet spot for service work, punch-list jobs, and tight mechanical spaces.

Overview

The Knipex 87 02 180 Cobra Water Pump Pliers are compact adjustable pliers for gripping and turning pipe, nuts, sleeves, and other fittings. This is a pair of water pump pliers designed for plumbing, service, and general repair work where you need a secure bite without carrying a larger set. Model Number: 87 02 180. At 7-1/4 inches long, they stay easy to pocket or drop in a service pouch while still reaching up to 1-1/2 inch round pipe capacity.

The big selling point here is how fast they adjust and how well they stay put once set. The push-button joint lets you size the jaws right on the workpiece, and the 18 adjustment positions make it easier to match different diameters without guessing. On the job, that means less fiddling between grips and a better hand position once you start turning. If you are bouncing between pipe, locknuts, compression fittings, and hex stock, that fine adjustment matters.

Knipex built these with a box-joint design, which is a big reason Cobra pliers have the reputation they do. The double guide adds stability at the joint, helps the jaws track true under load, and cuts down on the loose, twisty feel cheaper groove-joint pliers get over time. The hinge bolt is designed to catch securely so the setting does not shift unexpectedly while you are working.

The teeth are another reason these stand out. Knipex uses special hardened gripping surfaces with teeth hardness around 61 HRC, so the jaws hold onto worn pipe and rounded hardware with less slip and less wear over time. For the user, that translates into more confidence when you lean into the handle and fewer chewed-up fasteners from a tool that keeps walking.

The forged chrome vanadium electric steel construction and multi-stage oil-hardening are not just catalog language. That material and heat-treat process are there so the pliers can take repeated load without giving up toughness. You want that balance in a tool that gets twisted hard on metal fittings all day. The polished jaws and gray atramentized finish round out a build that is clearly aimed at pro use, not occasional drawer duty.

From a comfort and jobsite practicality standpoint, these use KNIPEXTEND comfort handles and include a pinch guard to help keep fingers out of trouble at the joint. The handle system also supports KNIPEXTEND ColorCoded Clips and TetheredTool Clips, which is useful if your crew organizes tools by color or works in situations where tethering matters. Those accessories are sold separately, but the handle design is ready for them.

The Knipex 87 02 180 Cobra Water Pump Pliers make the most sense for plumbers, HVAC techs, mechanics, maintenance crews, remodelers, and serious DIY users who want a compact gripping tool that still handles real work. If you spend your day in cabinets, behind equipment, or in mechanical rooms, this size is a strong choice. It is small enough to carry constantly and capable enough that it will not feel like a compromise.
