Overview

Knipex 85 01 250 US SmartGrip Water Pump Pliers with Automatic Adjustment is a 10-inch adjustable gripping tool built for fast changes between different pipe, nut, and fitting sizes. This is a water pump pliers tool designed for gripping and turning round and hex workpieces with less setup time. Model Number: 85 01 250 US. If your work has you bouncing from one size to another, this tool matters because it removes the usual stop-and-readjust routine that slows you down.

The standout feature is the automatic adjustment. Instead of opening the pliers, finding the right groove, and resetting them every time, you place them on the part and squeeze. For plumbers, maintenance techs, mechanics, and general service work, that saves small chunks of time on every adjustment, and those small chunks add up fast over the course of a day.

Knipex also built these pliers to hold under load. The self-locking action on pipes and nuts helps prevent the jaws from walking off the workpiece, so you are not wasting grip strength just trying to keep position. That lower hand effort is a real advantage when you are breaking loose fittings, holding parts in place, or working overhead and in awkward positions.

The jaw geometry and slim head design make this tool more useful in tight spots than bulkier pliers. The head and joint area are compact, and the joint bolt sits flush, which improves access around nearby obstructions. On shutoff valves, under-sink fittings, appliance connections, and crowded mechanical spaces, that tighter profile can be the difference between getting the tool in place or reaching for something else.

Build quality is where this pair separates itself from throwaway pliers. The body is made from forged, oil-hardened chrome vanadium electric steel, and the gripping teeth are specially hardened to about 61 HRC for low wear and reliable bite. The box-joint design uses a double guide for added stability, which matters when you are putting real torque into the handles and do not want flex in the joint.

Day-to-day usability is well thought out too. The non-slip plastic handles give you a secure hold without turning the tool bulky, and the pinch guard helps protect your fingers during adjustment. There is also a locking lever for closed-handle storage, which is a small detail, but a good one if this tool lives in a pouch, drawer, or crowded service bag.

Capacity is right in the range most users need for general service work. The maximum jaw opening is 1-1/4 inches for round pipe and 1-13/32 inches for hex material, so it covers a broad spread of common fittings without making the tool oversized. At about 0.825 lb and 10 inches long, it is large enough to give useful leverage but still easy to carry as an everyday pliers option.

Who should buy it? Anyone who regularly works on plumbing connections, mechanical fittings, equipment service, or general repair where sizes change constantly. If you want a dedicated water pump pliers option that is faster to set, easier on your hand, and built to last, this is a smart buy. If you only grab adjustable pliers once in a while, it may feel like more tool than you need. But for frequent use, the convenience is real.

Faster Adjustments, Less Fiddling

The automatic adjustment system is the whole point of this tool. When you are moving from one fitting size to the next, it lets you get on the part quickly without stopping to manually reset the joint every time.

• Automatic adjustment works for both right-handed and left-handed users
• Especially useful for frequent changeovers between different workpiece sizes
• Flush joint bolt and slim head improve access in cramped work areas
