Key Features

Slim and Lighter The slim-forged build is designed to be lighter than traditional wire strippers, which matters when this tool lives in your hand all day during rough-in and trim work. Built for NM Cable This wire stripper/cutter handles 12-14 AWG solid wire, 14-16 AWG stranded wire, and 12/2 and 14/2 NM-B cable, so it covers the wire sizes electricians reach for most in residential work. More Than Stripping Knurled jaws twist up to three 12 AWG wires, the spring opens the tool back up for the next cut, and the built-in shear cuts 6-32 and 8-32 screws cleanly without reaching for another tool.

Overview

Klein Tools Slim-Forged Dual NM Cable Stripper/Cutter is a hand tool built for electricians who spend their day stripping, cutting, and twisting common residential conductors. This is a wire stripper/cutter designed for stripping and cutting NM cable and copper wire during electrical installation and service work. Model Number: K12045. If your regular work involves 12/2 and 14/2 NM-B cable, this tool is aimed right at that job.

What makes this one practical is that Klein focused on the wire sizes that actually show up all the time. It strips 12-14 AWG solid wire, 14-16 AWG stranded wire, and 12/2 and 14/2 NM-B non-metallic sheathed wire. That means less fiddling with multiple tools when you're roughing in devices, making up boxes, or trimming out circuits. The blade design is built to maximize leverage for easier wire cutting, so you're not fighting the tool every time you nip conductors to length.

The slim-forged design matters more than it sounds on paper. A lighter stripper is easier to carry and easier to control, especially if you're opening cable, stripping ends, and repeating the same motion all day. Klein calls out this design as lighter than traditional wire strippers, and that benefit shows up in reduced hand fatigue and a tool profile that fits a pouch without feeling bulky.

This tool also covers a few of the small tasks that usually slow you down. The knurled plier jaws grab and twist up to three 12 AWG wires, which is useful when you're making up conductors in a box and want a secure twist before adding a connector. The built-in bolt cutter cleanly shears 6-32 and 8-32 machine screws, so you can trim common device and box screws without flattening the threads. That saves a trip back to the bag for a separate screw cutter.

On the handling side, the internal spring gives the Klein Tools Slim-Forged Dual NM Cable Stripper/Cutter easy self-opening action. In real use, that means faster repeat cuts and less effort reopening the jaws after every strip. It also has a locking feature so the tool stays closed in a pouch or pocket when you're climbing ladders, moving through a jobsite, or just trying to keep sharp edges tucked away between tasks.

Build-wise, the tool uses stainless steel with the familiar Klein yellow handles. Stainless steel is a sensible choice here because this is a daily-use electrical hand tool that will see repeated cutting and stripping cycles. The overall length is 8.37 inches, giving you enough handle for leverage without turning it into an oversized pair of strippers that gets in the way in tight panels or crowded work areas.

This is not a general-purpose do-everything electrical multitool. It is a focused residential wiring tool for the wire sizes and cable types many electricians use constantly. If you mainly work on NM cable, device boxes, switches, receptacles, and branch circuits, it makes a lot of sense. If your day is mostly heavier gauge work outside its listed stripping range, you'd want a different tool matched to that work.
