Back Up What Matters This automatic transfer switch has a built-in 10-circuit load center, so the generator powers the essential circuits you choose instead of the whole house. Pre-Wired for Faster Installs The switch arrives pre-wired with a 2 ft whip for connecting to the main distribution panel, which cuts down on field wiring time. Listed for Standby Use cETLus listed and suitable for optional standby systems under NEC Article 702, with a UL-recognized heavy-duty Generac contactor.

Overview

The Generac Power Systems RXG10EZA1W 50 Amp 10 Circuit Automatic Transfer Switch is a pre-wired essential-circuit transfer switch for homes and light commercial buildings backed up by a Generac air-cooled standby generator. This is an automatic transfer switch designed for moving selected circuits from utility power to generator power during an outage, and back again when utility power returns. Model Number RXG10EZA1W.

Generac designed this switch to operate with 8 to 24 kW air-cooled Generac standby generators. Instead of switching the whole electrical service, it uses an integrated load center to carry only the emergency circuits you move into it: the furnace, well pump, refrigerator, sump pump, and a few lighting and receptacle circuits. That approach makes the most sense where the main service is large and only part of the building load will run on the generator.

The switch is rated 50 A at 120/240 V, single phase, 60 Hz, with a 10,000 A withstand rating. It uses open transition, which means it disconnects from the utility before connecting the generator, so the two sources are never tied together. The heavy-duty Generac contactor is a UL-recognized device built for years of service, and the switch can be operated manually when it is de-energized.

Installation is where a pre-wired switch saves money. The RXG10EZA1W comes pre-wired with circuits for one 30 A 240 V load, one 20 A 240 V load, and three 15 A 120 V loads, plus a 2 ft whip that connects the transfer switch to the home's main distribution panel. The load center is multi-listed for 1" standard, tandem, GFCI, and AFCI breakers from Siemens, Murray, Eaton, and Square D, which gives the installer flexibility to match the existing panel and code requirements without special-order parts.

The generator does the thinking. The controller at the generator handles all timing, sensing, and exercising functions, so the switch itself stays simple. At Generac's factory defaults, the generator starts 5 seconds after utility voltage drops below 65 percent, warms up for 5 seconds, then transfers the load. When utility voltage recovers above 80 percent, the system waits 15 seconds to confirm stable power, transfers back, and lets the engine cool down for 60 seconds before shutting off.

The switch is housed in a steel NEMA 1 enclosure finished with electrostatically applied, baked powder coat paint. NEMA 1 is an indoor rating, so plan to mount it inside next to the main panel; it can be flush mounted in a wall. Conductor lugs accept 1/0 to #4 wire, and the neutral and ground lugs accept 2/0 to #14.

Who should buy it? Homeowners pairing a switch with an air-cooled generator in the 8 to 24 kW range, and electricians who want a fast, code-listed essential-circuit install. If you are still sizing a system, start by choosing the generator from the Generac Power Systems lineup, then confirm with your electrician that 10 circuits and 50 A cover the loads you need to keep running.

Pro Tip

Make your essential-circuit list before the electrician shows up. Write down each load, its breaker size, and whether it is 120 V or 240 V, then check it against the switch's pre-wired circuits. It keeps the install on schedule and avoids surprises when the first outage hits.

Tool Nut's Take

Tool Nut's Take

The Generac Power Systems RXG10EZA1W 50 Amp 10 Circuit Automatic Transfer Switch Keeps the Essentials Running

For an air-cooled standby generator that only needs to carry the critical loads, a pre-wired essential-circuit switch is the cleanest way to do it.

• Who it's for: Homeowners and electricians installing a Generac 8 to 24 kW air-cooled generator for essential-circuit backup.
• Why it stands out: Pre-wired circuits, a 2 ft whip, and multi-listed breaker compatibility shorten the install, and open transition keeps utility and generator power separated.
• Worth knowing: The NEMA 1 enclosure is indoor-only, and this is not a whole-house switch. Installation should be done by a licensed electrician.

Common Questions

• Which generators does it work with? Generac designed it to operate with 8 to 24 kW air-cooled generators.
• Can it be installed outdoors? No. It uses a NEMA 1 enclosure, which is rated for indoor installation.
• Does it power the whole house? No. It powers the essential circuits wired into its integrated 10-circuit load center.
• Which breakers can I use? It is multi-listed for 1" standard, tandem, GFCI, and AFCI breakers from Siemens, Murray, Eaton, and Square D.
