Key Features

Lays Flat on Curves The flat blade bends easily around curved and contoured surfaces, then sits flat so your marks land where they should. That makes layout work cleaner when a standard stiff tape wants to twist or lift. Story Pole Layout This FastCap tape measure uses the Standard Story Pole format, which is useful when you need to repeat measurements and transfer layout points fast. It is a practical choice for trim, cabinet, and finish work. Jobsite-Friendly Body A built-in FastPad gives you a spot to jot down measurements, while the compact case and protective rubber boot help the tape hold up better in daily use.

Overview

The FastCap ProCarpenter FlatBack Tape Measure, model PSSP-FLAT16, is a 16 foot tape measure built for layout work where a conventional blade is not the best fit. This is a tape measure designed for measuring and marking curved, contoured, and repeat-layout surfaces. This Standard Story Pole Flatback version is aimed at carpenters, trim installers, cabinet guys, and serious DIY users who want a tape that can do more than just span a straight line.

What sets this one apart is the FlatBack blade design. Instead of fighting the surface, the blade bends easily and lays flat, which helps when you are wrapping around rounded material, marking along a contour, or transferring repeated dimensions. On the job, that matters because a blade that sits flat is easier to read and easier to mark from accurately.

This PSSP-FLAT16 version is the Standard Story Pole style. That makes it especially useful for repetitive layout tasks where consistency matters more than speed alone. If you are building out cabinets, setting trim reveals, laying out shelves, or repeating dimensions from one part to the next, a story pole style tape can save time and cut down on avoidable mistakes.

FastCap also built in a few features that make the tape more practical day to day. The original ProCarpenter tape measure line includes a FastPad for writing down measurements right on the tape case, so you are not digging for a pencil and scrap wood every time you need to remember a number. The compact body makes it easier to carry, and the heavy-duty protective rubber boot helps the case deal with jobsite bumps better than a bare plastic shell.

At 16 feet, this measuring tape hits a sweet spot for interior work, punch list jobs, and general layout without carrying extra bulk you do not need. It is not trying to be a long-reach framing tape. It is built for control, readability, and accuracy on detail-heavy work where the surface itself may be part of the challenge.

The FastCap ProCarpenter FlatBack Tape Measure is a smart buy for finish carpentry, cabinet installation, remodeling, woodworking, and shop use. If most of your measuring happens on straight framing members, a standard tape may be enough. But if you regularly measure curved surfaces, transfer repeated dimensions, or want a tape that is easier to mark from, this one earns its spot fast.

Better Control on Curved Layouts

The big reason to choose this tape is simple: the blade lays flat where other tapes want to spring, curl, or fight you. That makes it easier to measure accurately on rounded edges, contoured stock, and layout tasks where repeatability matters.

FastCap ProCarpenter FlatBack Tape Measure for smarter layout work

This is the kind of tape you buy when a regular tape measure keeps getting in the way of accurate marking on curved or repeat-layout work.

• Who it's for: Trim carpenters, cabinet installers, woodworkers, remodelers, and anyone doing detail work where repeatable measurements matter.
• Why it stands out: The flat blade design is the whole point here. It bends and lays flat, which makes curved-surface measuring and story pole style layout a lot more practical.
• Worth knowing: This is a specialized 16 foot measuring tape, not a big framing tape. If your work is mostly straight-line rough carpentry, you may not need it. If you do finish work, you probably will appreciate it fast.
