Find Defects Before Finish This LED sander light throws a low, angled raking beam across the workpiece, so scratches, swirls and missed spots show up while you can still sand them out. Toolless On and Off The light attaches to and detaches from the Festool RO 150 without tools, so it goes on for final grits and comes off when you don't need it. Light on the Work, Not Your Eyes A built-in visor keeps the beam pointed at the surface, so you can watch the scratch pattern without glare.

Overview

The Dutton Corded LED Light for Festool RO150 Sander is an add-on work light for woodworkers, furniture makers, cabinet shops and finishers who sand with the Festool ROTEX RO 150. This is a sander-mounted LED light designed for spotting surface defects during sanding. Model Number SL-RO150 mounts to the sander and lights the surface right where the pad is working.

The problem it solves is familiar to anyone who finishes wood. Overhead shop lighting is flat and even, which hides swirl marks, cross-grain scratches and small glue spots until stain or finish soaks in and makes them obvious. A raking light works differently. It hits the surface at a low angle, so every scratch and dip throws a shadow. The Dutton light puts that raking beam on the sander itself, so you see the defects while the abrasive is still on the surface.

Installation is toolless. The light attaches to the RO 150 and comes off just as easily, which matters on a sander you use for both aggressive stock removal and fine finishing. Leave it on for the final grits, take it off when you don't need it, and nothing about the sander is modified.

The built-in visor shields your eyes from the LED. Light goes down and across the work instead of back at you, so you can watch the surface for long stretches without squinting or getting dazzled.

This is a corded light and must be plugged in to operate. It comes with a 16 ft power cord and zip ties for fastening the light's cord to the sander's own power cord, so you manage one bundle of cords instead of two.

The light fits the Festool RO 150 FEQ ROTEX sander. Dutton makes versions for other sanders, so match the model to the sander you own. The sander itself is not included.

Who should buy it? Anyone who has found a swirl mark after the first coat of stain. Furniture makers, cabinet shops, refinishers and serious hobbyists who stain or finish fine work will get the most from it, especially when sanding figured or dark woods where defects are hard to see under normal light.

See Every Scratch While You Sand

The light sits low at the pad, so the beam rakes across the surface you're sanding. Defects cast shadows you can see in real time, and you fix them before moving on to the next grit or reaching for RO 150 abrasives you didn't need to use.

• Angled raking light reveals scratches and swirl marks

Pro Tip

Dim or switch off the overhead lights near the bench for your last grit. With less ambient light washing out the surface, the raking beam makes leftover scratches from the previous grit far easier to see.
