Overview

The DEWALT DWMT74738 3/8 in. Drive Combination Deep Impact Socket Set with Ratchet (23-Piece) is a mixed SAE and metric impact socket set built for fastening, removal, and general mechanical service. This is a ratchet and socket set designed for working on fasteners in automotive, equipment, garage, and general repair applications. Model Number: DWMT74738. If you need one compact 3/8 in. impact socket set that covers the common sizes without jumping straight to a bulky master set, this is the kind of kit that makes sense.

The big draw here is coverage. You get ten metric deep six point impact sockets, ten SAE deep six point impact sockets, a 3 in. impact extension, a quick-release ratchet, and a 3/8 in. drive drill adapter, all packed into one case. That means this set is not just a pile of sockets. It is a working fastening kit that can go from hand use with the ratchet to powered use with an impact-rated setup, depending on the task and access.

DEWALT uses DirectTorque technology on these sockets, and that matters more than the name might suggest. In plain terms, the socket is shaped to grip more on the flat sides of the fastener instead of loading the corners as hard. On rusty hardware, over-tightened bolts, or fasteners that have already seen some abuse, that can be the difference between getting the job done and turning a simple repair into an extraction project.

The sockets are made from heat-treated CR-440 steel and finished with black oxide for corrosion resistance. That is the right combination for a set that is going to live in a truck box, roll cart, or unheated garage where humidity and grime are part of the deal. The high-visibility laser-etched markings also help in real use. Deep sockets tend to collect dirt and oil fast, so readable markings save time when you are moving between sizes.

The included ratchet is not an afterthought. DEWALT calls out a 72-tooth mechanism with a 5 degree arc swing, which is useful when you are working around engine bays, brackets, suspension hardware, or any spot where you cannot make a wide handle sweep. A finer ratchet mechanism means more movement in less space, and that is one of those things you notice immediately the first time access gets tight.

From a system standpoint, this set is built around a 3/8 in. drive, which is a sweet spot for a lot of daily service work. It is large enough for plenty of automotive and equipment fasteners but still compact enough to stay useful in tighter areas. The sockets are also listed as O-ring and retaining pin compatible, which matters if you are using impact tools that rely on secure socket retention instead of friction alone.

The storage setup is another practical part of the package. The set comes in a hard storage case, and DEWALT also refers to it as a Tough Box in some listings. For a mixed metric and SAE set, that matters because the whole point is speed and organization. If the sockets are not easy to keep sorted, you lose half the value of the kit. This one is clearly intended to travel and to stay together.

Who should buy it? Anyone who regularly deals with mixed fastener standards and wants a compact, impact-ready 3/8 in. socket kit with useful coverage right out of the box. It makes the most sense for mechanics, maintenance techs, farm and fleet users, DIYers who do their own vehicle work, and contractors who need a dependable socket set in the truck without carrying a giant drawer full of pieces.

Coverage That Actually Gets Used

This set covers the sizes most users actually reach for in a 3/8 in. drive kit, without wasting space on filler pieces. The mix of metric and SAE deep sockets makes it a strong everyday set for vehicle service and equipment repair.

• Includes 10 metric deep six point impact sockets from 12 mm to 21 mm
• Includes 10 SAE deep six point impact sockets from 3/8 in. to 1 in.
• Adds a 3 in. extension, quick-release ratchet, and 3/8 in. drive drill adapter

Works Better in Tight Service Areas

The included ratchet is set up for places where a full handle swing is not happening. A fine-tooth ratchet pays off fast when you are working around brackets, hoses, frame rails, or crowded assemblies.

• 72-tooth ratchet mechanism with 5 degree arc swing
• Quick-release design helps speed up socket changes
• 3/8 in. drive size balances access and usable torque for general service work

Pro Tip

Use the ratchet to start or break loose the fastener, then switch to the drill adapter or an impact setup for speed once the threads are moving cleanly. That saves wear on the ratchet and makes the most of having both hand and powered options in one case.
