Key Features

Ratchet Inside the Handle A fine 36-tooth ratchet with a 10-degree return angle lets you keep turning without regripping, even where there is little room to swing your wrist. One-Hand Bit Changes This bit-holding screwdriver uses Wera's Rapidaptor chuck: push a bit in to lock it, push the sleeve forward to pop it out. Intuitive Direction Switch A ring at the front of the handle switches between clockwise ratcheting, counterclockwise ratcheting, and locked, without taking your eyes off the work.

Overview

The Wera 838 Ra-R M Bit-Holding Handle With Ratchet Functionality, 1/4-in., 1/4-in.x123.5-mm. is a compact ratcheting screwdriver handle for mechanics, electricians, technicians, and anyone who drives a lot of screws by hand. This is a bit-holding screwdriver designed for fast, controlled hand fastening with interchangeable 1/4" hex bits. Model Number 05051493001 is the medium-length handle in Wera's 838 RA ratchet family, a step up from a standard bit holder screwdriver because of the ratchet built into the handle.

The ratchet is what makes the 838 RA-R M worth owning. Its fine toothing has 36 teeth and a 10-degree return angle, so it engages after a small turn of the wrist. You can drive or back out a screw without repositioning your hand on every stroke, and the mechanism also lets the bit spin freely for quickly running down a loose screw. The entire mechanism is embedded in the handle, which keeps the tool short enough to use in cramped spaces.

The front of the tool is Wera's Rapidaptor quick-release chuck. Push a bit into the chuck without touching the sleeve and it locks automatically as soon as the bit is applied to a screw. Bits are held securely and without wobble. To change bits, push the sleeve forward: a spring lifts the bit off the magnet and releases it, so even short bits come out without pliers. A strong permanent magnet keeps bits in place between changes. The chuck accepts 1/4" hex bits to DIN ISO 1173-C 6.3 and E 6.3, as well as Wera series 1 and 4 bits, which covers most of the Wera driver bit sets you are likely to own.

The handle is a multi-component Kraftform design with anti-roll protection. Kraftform handles are shaped to fit the hand for comfortable screwdriving that helps avoid blisters and calluses, and the anti-roll profile keeps the tool from rolling off a bench, a vehicle fender, or a ladder top. Overall length is 4-7/8" (123.5 mm).

The 838 RA family includes other lengths. The Wera 838 RA S is the shorter 4" (102 mm) handle, this RA-R M is the medium handle with the Rapidaptor chuck, and the Wera 838 RA-R L is the longer 5-1/2" (140 mm) handle.

Who should buy it? Anyone who already owns a drawer full of 1/4" hex bits and wants a single handle that works faster than a fixed-blade screwdriver. Panel builders, appliance and HVAC technicians, automotive and bicycle mechanics, and electricians will get the most out of the ratchet and quick bit changes.

Keep Turning Without Regripping

Short strokes do the work. The ratchet catches with a small return angle, so you keep pressure on the screw and your grip stays put.

• 36-tooth fine ratchet
• 10-degree return angle

A Ratchet You Never See

Wera builds the ratchet completely into the handle, so there is no separate head adding length. The tool stays compact enough to work in tight spots.

• Ratchet fully embedded in the handle
• 4-7/8" (123.5 mm) overall length

Switch Direction Without Looking

One ring sets the ratchet to tighten, loosen, or lock solid. Use the locked position like a fixed screwdriver for breaking loose or final snugging.

• Clockwise, counterclockwise, and locked positions
• Ergonomic switch at the front of the handle

Bits Out Without Pliers

Push the sleeve forward and the spring lifts the bit off the magnet. Short insert bits come out as easily as long power bits.

• Rapidaptor quick-release chuck
• Strong permanent magnet holds bits securely

Tool Nut's Take

Tool Nut's Take

The Wera 838 RA-R M Does More Than a Fixed Screwdriver in Less Space

A fine-tooth ratchet, a chuck that changes bits with one hand, and a Kraftform grip in a handle under 5" long.

• Who it's for: Technicians, electricians, and mechanics who drive screws by hand all day and already own a selection of 1/4" hex bits.
• Why it stands out: The 10-degree return angle works in spots where a coarse ratchet will not engage, and the Rapidaptor chuck is one of the easiest bit changes around.
• Worth knowing: This is the handle only. If you need bits too, the Wera Kraftform Kompakt 838 RA-R M Set 1 builds a bit selection around the same 838 RA-R M handle.

Common Questions

• Does it come with bits? No. This is the handle only and accepts 1/4" hex bits.
• Can it be used as a regular screwdriver? Yes. The switch has a locked position that disables the ratchet.
• Will it hold short insert bits? Yes. The Rapidaptor chuck holds Wera series 1 insert bits as well as series 4 power bits, and the spring release makes short bits easy to remove.
